The Miraculous Octopus

This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!

We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.

This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

Octopuses have 3 HEARTS?!? Let alone it is incredible to see a species have 8 legs similar to a spider. It was always interesting and quite neat how there are many different species and categories of them and they all have different aspects to their body diagram. For example it’s funny to think about how us humans are a species that don’t get to have a tail!

In this science live, they talked about octopus. Dr. John showed a video that the octopus was camouflaged in a piece of algae. He also showed a slow video with the same thing, and we can see that the animal changed his color to camouflage somewhere. This occurs because the octopus contracted and expanded the little bags of pigment, and when they contracted, the color dissappear, and when they expanded, the color appeared. Tobias talked about the intelligence of the octopus. The octopus has a jelly body, without bone, so they can change the shape. They are also able to memorize facial features of people. Roger Billings and Pajet showed us an open field that is used to play baseball games. They teach us about the types of octopus and it’s curiosities like the ink that the octopus releases when it feels threatened.
