The Miraculous Octopus
This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!
We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.
This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

The octopus part was so cool and interesting!
What is the iq of an octopus
It’s interesting how these little thing we can do, and don’t really think about are so rare in other animals. Like how octopi can think ahead.
I love octopus. And it’s pretty cool they have 8 arms.
I never knew that octopuses could feel colors with their skin.

octopus are amazing creatures they are so cool and intersting
Hi from NC, the octopus is cool!
Octopuses have 3 HEARTS?!? Let alone it is incredible to see a species have 8 legs similar to a spider. It was always interesting and quite neat how there are many different species and categories of them and they all have different aspects to their body diagram. For example it’s funny to think about how us humans are a species that don’t get to have a tail!
I love how octopuses can blend into their surroundings.
Thank you
I actually heard octopuses had three hearts before.
Good episode!
Thank you

the octopus can change its color it takes to tense of a time to change colors and they also mimic there life and they have sensors in their skins and it is amazing and the octopus opened the box and it took about eight tries and he finally did it and the octopus was a very interesting creature that can do a variety of things.
I think the octopus is a really cool creature! I never knew they used muscles to change the texture. I REALLY didn’t know their skin could feel what color the things around them are, that’s just awesome!

I think it is weird that German soccer team, uses a octopus to predict the game. 🐙 ⚽
The little octopus just likes doing stuff on its own.
In this science live, they talked about octopus. Dr. John showed a video that the octopus was camouflaged in a piece of algae. He also showed a slow video with the same thing, and we can see that the animal changed his color to camouflage somewhere. This occurs because the octopus contracted and expanded the little bags of pigment, and when they contracted, the color dissappear, and when they expanded, the color appeared. Tobias talked about the intelligence of the octopus. The octopus has a jelly body, without bone, so they can change the shape. They are also able to memorize facial features of people. Roger Billings and Pajet showed us an open field that is used to play baseball games. They teach us about the types of octopus and it’s curiosities like the ink that the octopus releases when it feels threatened.
Another fascinating watch! Octopus are such smart creatures. I’ve seen them solve puzzles and go through mazes. Truly amazing
