The Miraculous Octopus

This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!

We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.

This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

I was really surprised to learn that octopuses are actually colorblind and rely on their skin to detect and respond to different colors in their environment. That’s such an incredible adaptation and shows how unique nature can be. It also made me think about how many modern inventions and technologies are inspired by observing animals and natural processes. Some of the most creative and effective ideas seem to come from studying how nature has already solved problems.
