The Miraculous Octopus

This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!

We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.

This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

Batteries have, of course, been evolving over the years. But a recurring issue with them is that most components inside are expensive metals or poisonous chemicals. So, researchers at Northwest University in Washington have been trying to fix those two issues, along with the issue of power when detached from most accessories. It was solved by… dirt. And microbes. This idea has been done before, but this team’s specific prototype of the fuel cell seems to work extremely well, being reliable even when the dirt is wet or dry.
