How We Make Rockets That Reach the Moon
Join Dr. Roger Billings and the Science Live team as we explore how we make rockets that reach the Moon, featuring NASA’s Artemis II mission — the first crewed return to the Moon in over 50 years!
In this lesson, discover what makes the massive SLS rocket so powerful: its giant solid rocket boosters, liquid hydrogen fuel, and the incredible engineering that lifts millions of pounds into space. You’ll also explore the advanced Orion spacecraft, the groundbreaking laser communication system that beamed HD video from 240,000 miles away, and the record-breaking 252,000-mile journey that took humans farther from Earth than ever before.
Whether you’re a budding space enthusiast, curious about the Artemis program, learning about rocket science, or dreaming of becoming an astronaut, this lesson has something for you. Perfect for students who want to understand the real engineering and technology behind sending rockets — and people — all the way to the Moon and beyond!

I would like to
know what kind of communication will be used by the Artemis 2 going to the moon? Will it be like radio waves? or more light waves?
I really enjoyed learning about rockets today!
Learning about those rockets was interesting

This was so cool to watch!
Wow this is so awesome!!!
R51 is very cool
Dr. John spoke about Artemis 2 going to the moon and the scientists using laser to communicate to the earth. What type of communication will this prove helpful?
I miss the protges but I liked r 51. I want to learn more about the old crock that ate dinasaurs.
R51 is so funny and Love the rockets. Love science live!!
I think the amount of science and calculations it takes to build a rocket that can reach the moon! I wonder why we haven’t gone to the moon more than we already have. I love these weekly videos!
Is hydrogen the cleaner choice for rockets?
Really cool science live!
It’s cool that thay sent people to the moon

I don’t think I can comprehend the size of a rocketship until I see it in real life.
Love it!
I’ve always been very interested in space and this has made my week.
Is your name in the list of names to go to the moon?
I enjoy watching science lives!

So cool!
iWe really enjoyed todays lesson. Tobias is our fav. He always has the best session. Keep up the great work.
I went to the Nasa Kennedy Space Center and I had fun learning about space. I got to see a life size model of the space shuttle and when I was in Disney I saw a space x launch which was cool. Then I watched the astronauts launch to the moon recently. I’d like to learn more about space.
Thank you for these lives.
Going to space seems so cool. Rockets are really and incredible machine.
Wow, rockets are so cool
I like it
its Brooklyn and I lowkey feel so bad for the astronauts about there bathroom 🤣🤣🤣
I love space, this has been my favorite science live to date!
what do you think we would have to do to make rockets as acsesable as a private jet? (and mabey a private jet as acsessable as a car)
what is nasa
I have a question regarding the solid-state fuel. I understand that it continuously burns to propel the rocket and then falls off, but how advanced is the conversion of fuel in comparison to how much it propels the rocket? Is it possible for this technology to get better or are we at the point where the gains would be minimal?
I saw Artemis II land on April 11th on the news with my dad. That Earthshine, though? Best thing I’ve ever seen! 🤩
Sorry that you guys can’t keep up with comments. Just know: I comment so you guys know I appreciate you.❤️❤️❤️
R51, thanks for the Martian Rock Buddy instructions! I’ll be sure to try it soon! Plus, I guess the rock will listen. I mean, you did say they’re loyal. 😂
Hi Mika! It’s so cool that you got to see the Artemis II landing!!! 🤩 Thanks for tuning in! (You’re gonna love your loyal Martian Rock Buddy 😉)
I LOVE SCIENCE LIVE!
How does the massive SLS rocket achieve the power needed for its lunar missions?
I love r51
I enjoyed the session and liked learning about rockets. It would be so cool to go to space.
Always find it interesting how we made rockets, as a society.
it’s amazing that there were giant verses of the animals we have to day.
Science is amazing!!
very interesting
hi from kentucky
Keep up the good work!
Even though I’m college-level, I’m still a fan of the fact that a new course taught by Trace Gibson is going to help older students prepare for life in general. The intro gave me some inspiration, especially the very beginning with the sunrise! I do wonder though, will that class be around when I’m college-level? I hope so! Just like she said, I’m excited for her class!
Another great video, science live is the best!!
