How We Make Rockets That Reach the Moon
Join Dr. Roger Billings and the Science Live team as we explore how we make rockets that reach the Moon, featuring NASA’s Artemis II mission — the first crewed return to the Moon in over 50 years!
In this lesson, discover what makes the massive SLS rocket so powerful: its giant solid rocket boosters, liquid hydrogen fuel, and the incredible engineering that lifts millions of pounds into space. You’ll also explore the advanced Orion spacecraft, the groundbreaking laser communication system that beamed HD video from 240,000 miles away, and the record-breaking 252,000-mile journey that took humans farther from Earth than ever before.
Whether you’re a budding space enthusiast, curious about the Artemis program, learning about rocket science, or dreaming of becoming an astronaut, this lesson has something for you. Perfect for students who want to understand the real engineering and technology behind sending rockets — and people — all the way to the Moon and beyond!

It’s crazy that we were able to make it back around the moon. I wonder how much easier it was to do this time because we had already done it before.
I wish Caleb and David Were on this one
I love science life
I actually didn’t know a whole lot about the Artemis missions until today. All I really knew was that they went around the moon and came back during the Artemis II mission, so it was actually really interesting to get to learn about that this week!
Were those laser shooting ships shooting each other or past each other?
I love learning about space stuff, it is really interesting to me!!
I thought that crocodile that ate Dinosaurs was insane! Imagine if we had a crocodile that large!
Learning about rockets is so interesting.

Really enjoyed this week’s program, would love to see more science live revolving around space & airplanes.
the boosters on the side of the rocket when they fall off would they just fall back to earth
polybutadiene acrylonitrile (PBAN) is the chemical used as solid fuel in the rocket Also what is the proper combination of oxygen and nitrogen used in a standard US steel scuba tank.
SpaceX’s Starship has an interesting fuel resource
This was genuinely so interesting and I have a short attention span so I am so thankful it was entertaining. It’s so hard to grasp how far we have gotten and how much we have learned (I would buy a moon rock from r51 :3 )
My future kids could say ” Dad, didn’t you see the second moon landing?”
I loved this episode

Is it likely we will ever live on the moon?
I love sience live
Researchers at Columbus State University have created the first fully-accurate model of the Deinosuchus Schwimmeri, a prehistoric crocodile that could grow up to 31 feet long, with its main diet consisting of dinosaurs. As with any other ancient creature, this replica was made by finding hundreds or potentially thousands of its bones and piecing them together.
I watched the rocket launch a few weeks ago.
I loved it alllll
It’s a lot of fun to learn from Dr. Billings
This live was amazing!

Pban is not the fuel it’s amounaim and aluminum to propel the rocket in to earth’s atmosphere.
Love Rockets and.learning about them. Didn’t realize how big and spacious they are.
How much does it cost to go to the moon. I bet the fuel is so much
I really like this video about learning more about rockets
What are the fuel costs on one trip to the moon?
I thought that was beautiful how Mr. Leer’s wife was able to carry on his legacy even though he died and she had no knoweldge of airplanes or being an inventioneer. I thought it was cool how the Artemis mission communicated back with earth. Do astronauts sleep rotating inside the spacecraft or do they strap themselves down when they go to bed?
I think rockets are some coolest things ever invented.
This is awesome!!
the moon and space is so cool!
I love Science!
I like the moon rock.
here from Nebraska, awsome video
sorry im late but im here to learn!!!
Hi from Nevada! The astronauts must have had to be really, really, really brave and confident in their abilities and their co-workers abilities to agree to go to space. Imagine how scary that must have been for their families. Anne they made it home safe! Woo-hoo!
We saw some earth pictures.
i love r51! and the moon rocks r51 made
roger billings is awesome
River I think r51 is funny.
Starting my day with Dr. Billings and team!

Loved this one
Enjoy it!!!
this was funt to learn
i dont belve we even went to the moon
@Houston, unfortunately I agree with you… we have videos of the Artemis crew EATING SOUP in space but we only have still pictures of Earth from one angle. Why couldn’t they have, say, taken a video out the window of the other things they passed in space?
I would love to go to space some day.
Who had the idea in the very being to make a rocket and did it work?
This chinese emperor (I don’t remember his name), he put some fireworks on a chair and launched them, that is generally known as the first rocket
very stunning the info about what the astronauts experimented in space. well, everything is just perfectly created !!!
I love the moon rock that r51 made. Science live is my favorite
wow!! this is so cool, i wanna be an astronaut
I enjoyed learning about the rockets,
