The segment about overcoming challenges in the invention journey was my favorite part. It is not just about the idea, but the perseverance!
The “Are We There Yet” spaceship design is a collaboration between my sister Elena and I. We each submitted a design of it with a differing rocket graphic.
My Dad got our water bottles to freeze like that when on vacation.

What would you pick, hydrogen car or hydrogen train.
Eletric vehicles seem the best way to go, as far as safety. Electric vehicles are getting more and more range, so I think eventually that wont be an issue. Especially with solar power charging and things like that. Just please get rid of wind farms. They cost more than they generate and they are terrible for the environment I hear.
How do you keep someone else from taking your ideas
I like how the video starts with the way we deal with ice on the wings of planes. I wonder about this a lot because I’ve been flying more recently and I can see on the tv’s how cold it is outside. I’ve always wondered why its just the wings that freeze but I’m assuming its because that’s what is furthest from the actual body of the plane. I am not done with the video yet though, so I hope I find out.
I hope in the future there would be hydrogen trains in Vietnam, look forward to trying it someday.

Why is it when you go higher up in space it gets colder and not warmer.
I’m thankful for a printer so I can print off my Acellus certificates.
I know that it gets colder and colder as you go up in the atmosphere, but I don’t why REALLY understand why, because if you go up into space, wouldn’t you be getting closer to the sun? And our planet gets hot from the sun all the time, so I’m just a bit curious about that. (P.S I have not watched the whole video yet so I hope my question gets answered later)

Why does ice only form on the wings of the plane?
The R51 shirt is great because it is simple and funny. It is easier to see what shirts are best when you can compare a couple . It helps to also understand what works best as a shirt, when seeing other ideas- it is like working with them in a way.
I think that it is amazing that there are so many ways to become inspired in life to pursue your passion.

That weeping wing is really cool, is this technology used in any highspeed or highaltitude aircraft? I would assume that it might be useful at those cold temperatures high in the atmosphere. All those shirts were pretty cool but I think my favorite was number 3!

I think great inventors need a combination of creativity, curiosity, and persistence, along with practical knowledge such as science or technology. I really enjoy the information provided on the process of invention.
It was mind blowing to see how copiers work, because I’m not sure I can count how many times I’ve copied something without a second though about the process. I never would have put my money on static electricity being the main part of the process. Does this science still apply to modern printers? I’m was pretty sad I didn’t make the cut of design winners, but I’m also very proud of everyone who did win with their design. Great job people!

At first i thought that there is no possible way that ice can form on the plane wing, but then i really started to think about it and being that high up and going as fast as planes go it makes so much more sense.

My brother and I once saw the super cool water at a science fair. The key is pure water because regular water has impurities unlike pure water. Pure water is chilled without being disturbed.

Interesting that vibrations can be used to shed ice off of the wings of aircraft. Additionally, it is fascinating that the vibrations have to be at the perfect resonant frequency to do so. Also, love the all the shirts at the end!

Hydrogen trains sound very environmentally friendly also efficient since they are fueled by well hydrogen. I think they are a very good endeavor and worth looking into probably better in the long run rather then diesel fuel

The technology and innovations to help keep ice off of airplane wings is interesting. I did not know that atmospheric freezing was an issue. I want to try the water bottle freeze experiment. I wonder if I can manage to get the conditions just right to freeze the water from liquid state.
All the shirt designs were so cool, but I also like number one the best. Cool car and cool design.
Its amazing how the temperature can be at a freezing level but it still remains as liquid. All it took was one hit and the liquid turned solid

Wow! This video really inspired me…I really love to invent things myself, (Coming from an artist) So I make lots of arts and crafts. But recently, I’ve been wanting to write this book I’ve had in mind for awhile. But the thing is, I have so many thoughts in mind, it’s so hard to situate them. So therefore, I gave up on it. Thinking I wasn’t gonna be able to pursue it. But after this video, I’ve grown that same passion for it again.

I loved watching the science live episode this week. My favorite part of this episode was the technology spotlight with Dr. John. Learning about soft ice and how engineers are finding ways to cause the airplane wings to defrost quickly was extremely interesting. I had no idea that this type of ice is actually up in the atmosphere which is the reason for many issues with planes. So I believe that creating a way that wings can shake is an extremely good idea. Hopefully it doesn’t end up like my water in the freezer. I can’t wait for next week’s episode Mr. B!

The ice frozen on the airplane’s wings is truly dangerous. When my family traveled during winter, I saw the workers at the airport sprayed special chemicals on the wings so that the moisture would not freeze on them when the airplane was thousands of miles high in the air.

Hello I am Huy Hoang. In episode 285 I learned a lot about the ice part. I learned that even in hot weather we can still have cold clouds in the air. Even in hot weather going to the clouds is a problem. Thats why I think we can invent all kinds of ways to not let the wings get frozen. I want to be an inventor like you Dr. Roger Billings. I never knew two radio stations can be on the same frequency, and to avoid overlapping they had to turn down the power since the frequency waves travel farther at night; nor did I ever knew that Roger Billings was an even announcer on a radio station.

This was very informative and super cool. In the beginning they were talking about ice particles for a little while, and it reminded me of how I put water bottles in my freezer, and leave them in their for a couple days, and when I take them out and hit it on a hard surface the ice reacts/me shaking the bottle. I liked the cute and cool idea of more shirts to come, showing the spirit of awesome science episodes!

The German wing with the ability to vibrate the ice off is pretty cool. Here in Montana we have to de-ice our planes between flights on the ground because they ice up during their flight. This new vibrating wing could save time not having to de-ice them before taking off again.

Hello from Virginia! I always enjoy the Breakthroughs in Science that Dr. Tobias shares with us. I always like to hear about how other inventors got their start and how they changed the world. Chester Carlson was a patent attorney, a physicist, and inventor. He did invent electrophotography now known as xerography “dry writing,” this was an invention that millions of us still use today.

I have a pretty funny story, I had a freezing cold water waiting for me at home . I got done working out and whenever I put it on my table to drink it, the water completely froze. I was upset because I was super thirsty so I had to drink a room temperature water 😔.

The super cooled water looks cool. It was fascinating when the water froze all of a sudden, it is interesting that it was cooler than what you use to make the water into ice. The ice would be a serious problem for planes, and I would know. My dad worked on planes as a mechanic in the Air Force. It would disrupt the aerodynamics of the plane, it could also make it front heavy if enough ice built up, which could cause it to flip over.🛫✈️🛬

freezing ice can be dangerous because it would I think slow down the airplane with the weight of the ice accumulating on the airplane wing, so I believe that the vibration would be a good idea to do that with the airplane.

I’m hoping there’s a date for when the Conspiracy Theories course comes out! Makes me curious to get to know another side of what Dr. Edmond believes have happened, especially with a more sensitive topic about who was actually involved in executing the events of 9/11 behind the scenes. Also the T-Shirt thing with Amazon that Dr. Billings talked about is probably one of the most useful things I’ve ever heard someone promote and encourage people to do.
