The Miraculous Octopus

This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!

We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.

This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

I think the octopus is the most amazing animal. I Hope to one day be a Marine biologist and be able to study them more. We were able to see one in an aquarium in Malta a couple summers ago and o remember sitting there for such a long time watching it because we were lucky to get there at feeding time. They put the food in a sealed container and it was able to open it !

How is it possible for octopuses to change their colors when they are color blind and get the correct color as well?

    Reply
    • Chloe

idk that is a good question

      Reply
    • Serenity

Octopus are technically color blind because their eyes contain only one type of photoreceptor, which perceives the world in grayscale. Despite this, they are masters of camouflage, likely using their uniquely shaped, wide, U-shaped pupils to create chromatic aberration, which acts like a prism, letting them detect color by focusing different wavelengths. (I got this from Google search, searching up the question, “Are octopus color blind?”)

This is really interesting to me, first of all, I love animals and reptiles of all kinds, and when you voiced your question, that made me curious, so I searched it up, planning to post it in here, for anyone who’s not allowed to access the internet.
I hope I was able to answer your question, Elliot! 😁(Even though I’m not a specialist or anything. 🤣)
