    Most of the energy loss is in the resistance of the electrolyte. Current flows there as the motion of ions rather than electrons, and ions are subject to drag forces that require energy to overcome the solution gets hotter.
    There are other sources of energy loss, too, at the interface of electrode and electrolyte.
