The Miraculous Octopus

This week join Roger Billings and the Science Live crew in an exploration of one of nature’s most remarkable creatures: the octopus!

We’ll learn about the octopus’s remarkable camouflage abilities and the science that allows them to change color and texture in as little as 200 milliseconds. Did you know they have no backbone and not one, but three hearts! Discover more fascinating facts and fun stories about these remarkably intelligent creatures.

This episode also includes updates on Acellus World – a new cyber school program, and don’t miss the hilarious segment where R51 attempts — with mixed results — to train an octopus named Octagon.

Octopi are such amazing creatures, how they can camouflage, spray ink, learn from prior mistakes, and learn to use objects to run or hide from predators is impressive! Scientists still have so much to research regarding the intelligence and abilities of an octopus. Thank you Science Live for another fascinating week of knowledge and Acellus for an affordable school curriculum!

Octopus can blend into the environment by changing the color of their skin. Some may say that octopus are smart and use objects as a tool to defend itself from prey.

I have a question and a comment tonight. My question is now that you are monitoring our time on Science Live, are we still supposed to comment every week, or is it optional? My comment is that I thought it was hilarious when R51 would get on the phone to Big R, the octopus would do whatever Little R had asked him to do. I really liked this episode and learning more about octopi.

Octopuses change color instantly using specialized skin cells called chromatophores.

Along with color, they can change skin texture to mimic rock or coral.

Actually we like Acellus without going through a local school, because we like to do Acellus year around, and sometimes take less than the full class load, so there is no pressure. Local schools have a strict timeline. They want students to take at least 6 classes every semester, and be done by June. It doesn’t work for us. We LIKE going to school year around. And we would rather go to highschool for 5 years, and have other activities, than get highschool done as fast a possible and wait until we are older for other activities.
