Binary Decade Counter

February 18, 2026  •  EPISODE 298

How do integrated circuits actually work? In this episode of Science LIVE with Roger Billings, explore the fundamentals of integrated circuits with a closer look at a binary decade counter and how it processes and counts electrical signals.

Learn more about the Acellus Robot Dance Contest and Acellus World, coming to Kansas City in May 2026! And get ready to discover fascinating science in the natural world—from hydrophobic spiders that repel water to the surprising fact that rainbows include invisible colors beyond what our eyes can see.

I thought this weeks episode of Science Live was astonishing. My favorite part was the technology spotlight with Dr. John. I never knew that water spider even exists, and it using such a amazing technique with their webs is amazing. The way engineer’s are trying to apply hydrophobic tendencies to something like metal. Using this new discovery for ship building sounds extremely interesting, and they could also apply this technique for planes so that when they crash perhaps they could floating above water giving the everyone extra time to be rescued. I loved today’s episode and I can’t wait to see you and the rest of the team next week Mr. B!

It’s interesting that colors have different temperatures. I knew that the reds, and oranges,
and yellows were called “warm colors”, and that the green, blues, and purples were called “cool colors”.
But I didn’t know the reason they were called that was because colors actually have different temperatures.
    That’s pretty cool!

Another interesting thing was hearing about the water spider and how it survives by the bubble/web it creates. The thing that really caught my eye was learning about the different circuits and how they work. The most interesting thing was learning about a flip flop and how it works. I never knew how many different circuits there actually were and that they all worked differently.
