How to Invent

November 19, 2025  •  EPISODE 287

How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

The idea of Morse code is super interesting to me and I’m glad we learned about it today. I also enjoyed the scientific process and really found the information valuable. Another thing I wanted to ask is, is there any other information Mr. Billings learned under his mentor that could inspire our generation?

Hello. Every invention stems from a need. to fulfill it , one begins with a hypothesis, followed by expérimentations. While watching this video, I note the progress made in such a short time in the field of communication, especially in terms of speed and volume of transmitted data. Question: how were they able to solve the problem of signal overlap in the wire.?

I loved this episode of Science Live; it was very intriguing. Tyler’s explanation on vectored instruction was very informative. I also enjoyed seeing the segment about the robot falling into graceful poses, it was funny and adorable. I learned it even helps with the impact of the fall. For instance, when the robot can’t let its battery pack get smashed. Additionally, I loved learning about Ray Tomlinson and Arpanet. I thought it was incredible how he was able to successfully send a message from one computer to the other. Also, the facts about the history of the “@” symbol was very interesting to me. In fact, I had no idea it existed long before email. I also enjoyed learning about inventing and more morse code from Dr. Billings. He is extremely inspiring, and so is Dr. Pajet. It was very funny how much R-51 wanted to be her favorite student!
