How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

Inventions are so cool !!! I wonder how Edison came up with the idea for the lightbulb and then made it real
The idea of Morse code is super interesting to me and I’m glad we learned about it today. I also enjoyed the scientific process and really found the information valuable. Another thing I wanted to ask is, is there any other information Mr. Billings learned under his mentor that could inspire our generation?
Butterflies are amazing!!!
I liked learning a little about emails and how the @ sign was picked out. Email is really great.
Science rocks!
One of my favorite acellus teachers used to say that at the end of every video…I loved Mrs Hillman
It would be fun to learn Morse Code and operate a Ham radio.
This video was very entertaining
Teaching the robots how to fall with style is so cool!
Thank you Mr. Rogers for all that you do!!!

This science live was fun! I enjoyed the part about morse codes.
I love watching science live.
Science live is so great and intriguing.
I love Science!
I think Morse Code is really interesting and fun.
Morse code is so cool. It really helped when the Navajo used it for the US.
I learned about inventions used to communicate, using wire to sending signals through it. My favorite part was the robots how they made them work.
Science live is cool
I always love to wake up and watch science live!!!
Roger Billings what kind of scientific invention would you like to see be made in 100 years?
science live is so interesting
I really like learning new things about science and history
Inventing emailing was so smart!
It was interesting to learn that the @ symbol was around far before email.
how were they able to solve the problem of signal overlap in the wire.?
Morse code was the best part of the science live, I love learning new things.
Had fun watching science live!!
Morse Code is cool.
I love that r 51 decorated his invention with his face on it!😂
Hello. Every invention stems from a need. to fulfill it , one begins with a hypothesis, followed by expérimentations. While watching this video, I note the progress made in such a short time in the field of communication, especially in terms of speed and volume of transmitted data. Question: how were they able to solve the problem of signal overlap in the wire.?
best part of my week
How did the inventions that people created help us build the society we live in today?
What other scientific advancements are being made using AI?
inventions are so cool
The robots are so cute!
The video taught me that inventing takes creativity, trial and error, and not being afraid of mistakes. It made the process feel simple and doable.
i enjoyed the part about morse code!
I find morse code the most interesting language because it uses sound, but the sound doesn’t come from humans.

Amazing video for my child.
I would love to learn Morse code one day.
The robots are funny. The first email is an interesting concept of invention.
Happy Thanksgiving week yall from Texas!!!!
I liked watching the robots getting pushed over and seeing them fall down all the different ways. That was kind of funny.
It’s interesting how instead of trying to prevent them from falling, they are teaching them how to fall in a certain way.
I liked the part in science live with Shakespeare.
I have been trying to think of things to invent. I think it would be fun.
Morse code is very interesting using the short and long sounds.
I enjoyed learning about Morse code.

I really enjoyed the video, and appreciate the scholarship. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
I woud like to say that I really appreciate being able to watch these educational videos.
Loved this live!!!
I have learned about making a hypothesis before, but this video makes me want to try to make and test hypotheses to make new inventions. I think inventing something would be fun.
Love this!
I didn’t know how Morse Code worked before, thanks for teaching me
Morse code is super fun
The morse code activity is a really good idea.
Enjoyable to watch as always.

Thank you!!!
Morse Code is SO cool!!!
I loved this episode of Science Live; it was very intriguing. Tyler’s explanation on vectored instruction was very informative. I also enjoyed seeing the segment about the robot falling into graceful poses, it was funny and adorable. I learned it even helps with the impact of the fall. For instance, when the robot can’t let its battery pack get smashed. Additionally, I loved learning about Ray Tomlinson and Arpanet. I thought it was incredible how he was able to successfully send a message from one computer to the other. Also, the facts about the history of the “@” symbol was very interesting to me. In fact, I had no idea it existed long before email. I also enjoyed learning about inventing and more morse code from Dr. Billings. He is extremely inspiring, and so is Dr. Pajet. It was very funny how much R-51 wanted to be her favorite student!
I love the morse code part I really want to learn morse code!
