How to Invent

November 19, 2025Β  β€’Β  EPISODE 287

How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventingβ€”showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

I always thought it was so awesome how radio waves could send messages without any visible means to do so. It almost seems like magic, but it’s science! Science is pretty much magic…you can do anything if you figure out how the world can make it happen.

It was fascinating seeing the robots that Disney was working on. They were learning how to fall gracefully to not damage themselves. They are being programmed to preserve the parts that are more sensitive like our human heads. I thought it was so funny how they positioned the robots to fall.

I love how Dr. Billings said that when you want to invent something, you have to find a need. Once you know the need, write it down. I always write things down. I journal my thoughts and feelings. When you write things down, it makes it real. It validates it, and it helps you remember.
