How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

I need to learn morse code!
Morse code is very impressive. Also, I love inventing!
It’s interesting that the symbol “@” was use years ago as a way to indicate the price of items. They made the right decision in the 1980’s to keep using “@” instead of changing it to “!”.
Morse code is awesome! but very hard to learn I believe, to me at least.
How fast can you learn Morse code?
Love Morse code

Thank you Dr. Billings for my scholarship! I watch science live every week no matter if it is a holiday or summer time.
At the end you where talking about the Acellus Science Live and how it works. I personally think if there was a page where a kid can see all the lives at once and they are marked when you watch them so it’s easy to find the ones you have not watched and can go back and watch them. Because I watch the Science Live every week but there have been times that I missed them in the past and I don’t remember if I saw the live or not. And if there is already an option to viewing all the lives you missed to go back and watch them, how do I do so? (please answer)
What advice would you give students who want to make a meaningful impact on the world through technology?
Vector instruction really works wonders for me!
To invent something, identify a problem, research existing solutions, brainstorm new ideas, and then create a prototype. Test and refine it until you have a working invention!
Hey Dr. John! The variety of poses that a robot can do really impressed me, but do you think in the future robots like those can combine multiple different poses and moves into a dance? Like an artificial dance team!
what if two people accidentally invent the same thing?
I really liked this episode! It made me wonder. When you’re coming up with a new invention, how do you tell the difference between a “good idea” and just a random thought that won’t go anywhere? Is there something specific inventors look for at the start?
Also, sorry for watching a few days late. I just got a new kitten and he’s basically taken over my entire life this week, so I’m finally catching up now. 😅
I LOVE morse code, its such an interesting thing to learn about!
Morse code is really cool, I think Acellus should totally come out with a course to learn it!!
An invention is something new that people make to help others
Morse code is so interesting! I hope I get the chance to learn in my future.
Thanks for this weeks Science Live! It’s always great to learn something new and inspire inventions.
Morse code is pretty neat. Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans here.
R 51 is so funny
The question is how do you invent something and you know it is not already made?
My dad has a radio at home that can recieve and transmit morse code. I loved this episode.
Your story that you told toward the end of the video about the breaker being flipped is really impressive! I also would like to say that I have seen parents posting that they have not been watching science live and laughing about it!!!! I think you are being very fair to us only having to watch 75% of the videos! I liked the little conversation at the end with R51 and with Lady Pajet!
Morse Code was also used on the Titanic.
I enjoy science live, thank you to everyone involved. Inventing is so important to progress humanity and the lives of people.
Thank You for all your knowledge…. You are a Genius!
Cool!
My great grandfather worked at Lear Jet and he built the jets. His name was Gary (same last name as mine). I was just wondering if you ever met him. When he started they did not have the wing lifts yet and while he was there they introduced them. They called them the long horns.
I love to invent things
I learned inventing doesn”t need to be complicated. It was also cool to learn that the earth can be used for communication.
I am happy to say I have only missed one Science Live since I’ve been using Acellus. I appreciate how they do their best to make it entertaining while also teaching us.
I never realized how cool Morse code is! I would love to learn more!
I learned Morse code a few years ago and it was very cool love this.
I enjoyed watching this episode. Morse code is super interesting!
I like the super duper communicator:)
How did they “teach” the robots to fall a certain way?
The creative process is really a wonder all on it’s own, making things aren’t easy, especially original ideas.
I think it would be interesting to learn about Morse code
Science is awesome
R-51 is my favorite part of the Science Live!
I would love to learn about Morse code.
