How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

I think it is smart that instead of experimenting just to prevent the robot from falling, they acknowledged it and came up with a funny solution.
I liked learning about the Disney robots. Morse Code is very interesting. I made a bracelet that was my name in Morse Code.
Greetings from Tennessee! I really enjoyed learning more about morse code!
I like how they broke down the invention process step-by-step. Makes it feel less overwhelming and more like something a regular person could actually do.
Hi from South Africa. Can’t wait to get more information about the scholarship!! I am so excited about this.
I loved the part about solving real problems—made me think about inventing something to help people with medical issues like seizures or sensory overload.
So inventing stuff is basically just figuring out a better way to do something? I literally come up with random ideas all day, so I might actually be good at this
I love hearing about new and old inventions.
My favorite part is when R51 was really surprised when she said he was her favorite of them all
I always look forward to the Science Lives! I have always thought about how we always try to make the robots so they don’t fall but if they do they just lay there struggling and they might break, so i think its a really good idea to make them fall with grace.
This is one of the better shows I’ve watched. I’m from Oklahoma
This episode of Science Live was really interesting!
Doctor Billings is so chill, he makes science even more fun!
Thomas Edison is one of my favorites inventor because without him thinking of a light bulb we wont have power today.
Its so cool you can conduct electricity with the earth.
I enjoyed Science Live today. I would love for you to add the Morse Code game!
I have had the same thought of why I haven’t tried to invent something, I guess I didn’t realize how easy it can be?!
I never thought about how important email is. If we didn’t have it, many forms of communication between people would be much slower and inefficient.
Today I learned that the invention process is easier than you think and to invent something, you have to have a necessity or problem.
I love this episode of Science LIVE!
This weeks live was very interesting! Despite email being commonly used, I had never really stopped to think about how it was created. And I loved the morse code segment as well!
We appreciate the scholarship and enjoy watching Science Live each week. We even watch when we’re on break and don’t have to for the scholarship. Morse code is so fascinating.

Science live is so cool my favorite part of school!
Thank you for this week’s science live! It’s always the highlight of my day!
Morse code is surprisingly elegant, I thought that those who read morse code simply memorise the dots and dashes for each letter, but instead it’s a specific checking system that has the most common letters be the most distinct ones, making them more easily recognizable, thus making translation faster. It’s a truly magnificent system!
Wednesday nights are my favorite
R-51 is actually the funniest person ever
Morse code is an interesting topic to learn about.
Hello from Arkansas! The live was amazing!

I love the cute little robot’s poses.
Hello Dr. Roger Billings, how fast can you write in morse code?
Technology has come so far that it almost feels unreal. Back in the days of the telegram, a simple message took time, effort, and special equipment just to send a few words. Communication was slow, limited, and often formal. Now, we can send full messages, videos, photos, live locations, and even have real-time conversations with someone across the world instantly. What used to take hours or days now takes seconds. We carry more power in our phones today than entire rooms of equipment used to hold.
My grandpa uses Morse code.
Morse code class! Morse code class! I’d love to learn it, like a whole new language!
I have to learn how to spell my name in Morse code!
How did Tom Edison come up with the telegraph and figure out what was wrong and how to fix it?
Thank you explains morris code I never knew how it worked. It’s to bad people are taking advantage of the scholarship you offer I am very grateful for it . My mom actually watches most of them with me she said you can never know to much and it’s to bad they didn’t have this when I was in school.
Hi from Texas!! Thank you Acellus team for everything you do for us students, I know I can speak for most of us and we greatly appreciate all you guys do to make sure we learn and grow as students and humans!
