How to Invent

November 19, 2025  •  EPISODE 287

How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

I didn’t know that Disney has been teaching robots how to “fall in style” to prevent them from breaking or harming any of the important things that keep them working correctly. I also found it very interesting that the AI Models ran different tests and ended up finding the best pose for the robots parts, in the event that they were to fall, that reduced the amount of damages!

Morse code is a communication method using a series of short signals(dots) and long signals (dashes) to represent letters, numbers and punctuation. Developed by Samuel Morse in the 1830s for the electric telegraph, It was the first system for rapid long-distance communication though the version created in 1851 called International Morse Code, is the most commonly used today. It can be transmitted through various means such as electrical pulses, audio tones or flashing lights.
