How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

Science is so cool – it makes everything make sense 🙂
I love learning how things are invented. It really interesting to learn how things have changed over time. Learning about the invention of email. My mom and grandma always tells me how much different life is now that we have an advancement in technology. From a world were we relayed on paper, pen, stamps and envelopes to a world where internet access is everything.
Science credit will be a great option. Glad “no robots were harmed.”
Can’t wait to see what I invent throughout my life!
I love learning new things on science life!
I loved learning about how the first computer send its first message! It really makes me appreciate our phones now!
“Necessity is the mother of inventions”
Thanks so much for the video! Can you explain a bit more about what thomas edison did with him inventing away to send messages at the same time over the same wire. You said changing the polarity what does that mean?
I love Science Live!!!
i would love to invent things that help people
I loved learning about Morse code, as well as CB radio, and HAM radio!

I loved learning about the @ symbol!
Loved this episode and I cant wait to learn more about inventions and inventing
How long did it take Ray to fool proof his idea of sending signals with messages from computers to each other?
I didn’t know that morse code was how messages were sent back then. That is a long time to talk to someone
R-51 is really funny.
Hi from Maryland! This live was sooo interesting
Love what you said about Morse code. I would love that as a class.

I learned some really cool stuff from this!
This is a interesting live, there are many ways to invent new inventions, even though some of them are very small.
We should have a Morse code class, an ASL class and an inventors class. all of those would be so interesting plus good credits
I hope to see more inventions involving hydrogen.
I learned about telegraphs and morse code, how inventors come up with ideas for inventions, and mindsets.
This was a very interesting episode. I would love to one day invent something .
Robotics are amazing.
I love learning new things. Awesome.
I never knew that robotics required this much thought to go into it. Plus, it’s cool to know how ‘@’ symbol was originated.
It’s awesome to consider what the future of invention holds!
It is intriguing to wonder what new inventions will be made in my lifetime, since so many things are different for me than they were for my parents.
When I get older I want to invent things.
I really like the robot classes and how they are taught. Programming is so cool, I like making them dance.
Thank you for another episode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😃😃😃
I love R -51
I love inventing and want to get better at it!!
Robots are so interesting to learn about!
I love learning about inventions.
Nice video. It’s fascinating to think that scientists used the scientific method for quick communication and that it all didn’t happen in one step, but in multiple like observation, question, hypothesis, expeiriment, conclusion, and then result.
When Tobias mentioned that 347billion emails are sent every day, does that mean that it is that number of emails in just one state, whole country, whole continent, or whole world? Thank you so much! Please answer me soon(today)!
Wow! I never knew that the @ symbol was created for a different purpose how cool!
I will definitely be taking notes and keeping up on what I want to achieve and accomplish thanks for the advice.
Robots are starting to do more and more things. I saw this one video at a restaurant where the robot was delivering the food and it was on tracks. Do you think robots will take over different jobs in the future? I think coming up with an invention and inventing takes a lot of hard work, but you should always try if you believe in something.
Dr.B you’re so encouraging!
I love science live, I always learn something new!
How on earth did people even begin to conceive robots and electronics?
really cool i never knew what this @ meant
I love science live and r.51
I’m really enjoying learning about Morse code. I think being able to get credits for watching Science Live would be amazing!

I love robots!
Robots are gonna be the future!
I learned so much informative episode I loved this episode.
I love science live happy thanksgiving
I’m sorry I’m late! I’m catching up today.
I’m glad Disney is doing work with robots. They have real-world needs, and those needs mean they need good results. Kind of like Musk with Space X. America is behind on robotics and I feel Disney could be an unexpected specialist in this area.
Also, I loved hearing Dr. Billings talking about Morse code. I’m looking forward to learning about Marconi next!
I like the techniques used to help robots protect themselves when they fall. The poses after they fall are funny. I never realized that there are ways to fall that are less damaging/painful.
I really enjoyed this episode! It’s cool how Dr. Billings shows that you don’t need to be a genius, just stay curious and look for simple fixes to everyday problems. Seeing how you can communicate with Morse Code, really highlighted that even basic concepts can change the world.
Inventing is awesome I like building things and I’m very curious on how things work really enjoy Area 51
I like this weak video. My favorite part was Dr. John’s. I thought the little robot was super cool and cute and also how they’re trying to learn to balance them and make them walk.
I love science live!!
I’ve always had trouble being creative, but now I see that creativity is actualy something you learn
Robots are so intriguing to program and study!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really like Dr. Joshua. He gives good advise on how to study with Acellus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Dr. B ! How anyone can start turning idears into inventions?

R51 is probably one of my favorite parts of science live!
I liked the really big computer that sends so many emails and the part where the kid is crumpling up the pieces of paper without using both sides then his mom asked why they were on the floor.
I love acellus
How to Invent, Once a prototype is created and tested, you can file a patent, secure funding, find a manufacturer, market and sell your invention.
R-51 is the best person in all of science live and nothing you say can change my mind
I really liked what Dr. Billings said about necessity being the mother of invention! I’ve always thought about how people back then were geniuses to have invented so many of the things that we enjoy today. It’s so true that when we are in need of something we are much more likely to work for it than if we had so much already. I really admire all of the hard-working men and women that continue to renovate and improve the things we use day to day. I hope I can continue to learn and stay motivated so that I can contribute as well. Thank you!
* Having robots can be a useful thing.
* It is interesting to see how computers were invented and how they started to identify and receive messages.
* There are many revolutionary technologies that are coming out right now.
* Mr. Billings is a very smart inventor and he is trying to empower us to make inventions.
* We can always do better and invent new things.
* Students will soon get credit for Science Live :).

it takes a very creative mind to become an inventor!
R51 is great!
It was fascinating to learn about the development of the various kinds of messaging. Very interesting.
Happy Thanksgiving Dr. Billings! How do you test a hypothesis and know if it works?
I like the idea of a hypothesis and how you don’t have to be fully sure when making one
R-51 is hilarious I also thought the morse code was interesting I always have trouble with it. I love Science live!
I love the robots flipping into a breakdance type of fall, like when they finish breakdancing they do a backflip into that type of fall. I also really want to try to learn morse code.
