New Way to Publish Science

September 17, 2025  •  EPISODE 278

What if science publishing could be faster, more transparent, and more open? In this episode, Dr. Roger Billings takes a closer look at the Science Information System (SIS)—a bold new vision for sharing research that breaks free from traditional gatekeepers. SIS empowers scientists to publish, update, and collaborate in real time. Explore how this revolutionary model is evolving, the challenges it faces, and why it has the potential to transform the future of knowledge.

Every week, I find each segment of Science Live interesting and informative. However, Dr. Billings and Dr. Pajet are so inspiring to me in the way they value everybody and want success for others. Dr. Billing’s discussion on how he values people very much, and encourages us to make good decisions to improve our futures is very inspirational to me. There were two topics specifically that really moved me. The first topic was when Dr. Billings mentioned fifty five years ago he started a journal with three other men, and it now earns ten million dollars a year. However, Dr. Billings doesn’t want to sell articles, he wants the information to be available to everyone. Additionally, he brings up a topic that is one of the largest issues in our society today. He asks the viewers: “Did you know that scientists don’t believe in a divine creator?” He says we can look it up online, and it will tell us they don’t. Despite this, Dr. Billings says he believes that notion is fake. He thinks there are a lot of scientists who are convinced there must be a divine creator, but they might be afraid to come out publicly and say it. They would most likely get bashed for it. As a junior who is active on social media like TikTok, I see this issue daily. People with opposing views are “canceled” by their peers and shown little empathy despite not having done anything wrong. Therefore, the way Dr. Billings wants us to express our ideas freely is so revolutionary for this society and especially my generation. I want to see a change in this world, and I believe that Dr. Billings is making a difference for the better.

I for one would love to get the chance one day to thank them in person. Hopefully when I graduate and go to Kansas City to walk and receive my deploma i will get this chance. Firstly, I would like to discuss Dr. John’s segment on super wood. I was astonished to hear that wood could be stronger than steel and non-flamable via externe compression. Secondly, I was happy to hear that Roger Billings, gave people an alternative to traditional scientific journal sites. It was interesting to hear how it was cheaper, more openly available and had no cost to read data. Thirdly, it was nice to see R51 again, I appreciate his inventioneer spirit. He never gives up even when it comes to impressing Pajet Monet.
