How My Training As An Inventioneer Altered Ethernet
Everyone said it was impossible. Engineers laughed and called it ‘The Billings Folly’ — as a joke. Then the entire internet adopted it, and now the whole world uses it.
Dr. Roger Billings tells the inside story of how full duplex gigabit Ethernet was invented, rejected at IEEE standards meetings, and eventually became the global standard behind modern internet, streaming video, and AI.
Discover the inventions that made it possible — the concentrator, the equalizer circuit, and the balanced hybrid circuit — and hear what happened when Ron Crane, the father of Ethernet himself, stepped in to defend it.

I liked this episode a lot! I didn’t know that a giga bit was so fast! Great episode.
awesome, can’t wait to watch next week!
love science live!
Had no idea that Edison was inspired by a fishing trip to invent a light bulb – that’s pretty cool.
love the video as always.
It is amazing the work they are doing with stem cells. I also read in article about T-cells and autoimmune diseases. Medicine is advancing rapidly.
Wow, I can’t believe that they are able to create a treatment for people that are deaf to be able to hear.
This shows it is always good to try your ideas because they might just work!
I wonder if they could use a similar technology to help people with eyesight like they did with hearing? Imagine seeing for the first time after not having sight?
I love science this is a great school see you next week
I am glad Dr. B did not let the doubts of others keep him from his work!
I look forward to these
See you all next week.
I love it so much 😻
Thank you for the information on the ethernet!
I loved this please make more!
love this awesome!
awesome video
I liked learning about the ethernet.
Amazing how inventions like the Ethernet can change the world.
It’s crazy how Ethernet technology sends data through cables so fast.
I love science live! What a great episode.
Really enjoyed this episode. Thank you!
Great Science Live!~
this was amazing
great episode; can wait to see the next one.
Ethernet still confuses us all with how it works and the technology to change it constantly. Computers and technology are cool!
Hi from Texas.
It feels crazy how everyone doubted him in the first place
Hi! Good science live r51 is cool.
It is really nice that some deaf people were able to hear for the first time with new technology.
This science live made my day!

I loved this weeks science live!
Good job Doctor Billings!
This Science Live gives a really inspirational conclusion, even when no one believes you, keep trying until you finally succeed! Learning about Ethernet cables and how Dr R. fixed the collision problems was so fun 🙂
Love the science lives! Keep it up
Technology has improved almost every part of life
Every week I load up Science live wondering what the protoges and inventioneers are up to this time
Amazing science live, see you next week!
why is my Psychology course making me repeat the same quiz over 10 times without counting as a single step?
science live is cool!!!
i love science live it was 😎
The Ethernet is very interesting.
Did Dr Billings invent cat5 cable ?
That was amazing.
What have you invented so far?
do you get gold credit from watching science live?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge *
such interesting topics today i loved it!
Cool! What does “full duplex” mean?
Wow! What inventions helped make it work?
Cool! Why do we need fast internet today?
That’s amazing! How did it become a global standard?
That’s interesting! Who helped support his idea?
Wow! What would happen without this invention?
That’s interesting! How do you use the internet every day?
Wow! How does this help streaming videos?
That’s inspiring! What did you learn from him?
That’s cool! What would they invent next?
Wow, science is amazing! Why do inventions matter?
great video ready for next week
That’s interesting! How do you use the internet every day?
Wow, big meetings! Why are standards important?
That’s surprising! Why did engineers laugh at his idea?
R-51 is so funny, can’t wait for next weeks video!
I wonder how long it took the researchers to make deaf people hear?
This weeks science live video was amazing, can’t wait to see what’s in store for next week.
loved the video
Crazy how far we’ve come!!
Hello from South Africa!
loved science live ♥
Today’s science live was so interesting! It’s so cool how you look for problems and ways to solve them. Very inspiring.
See you next week!!
it so funny and cool especially the guy i forgot his name he was wearing a paper mustash thank you for another science live
okay this video was very interesting i enjoyed watching this and it made my day i feel so smarter
hiii from South Africa
I love scince live .
I loved this episode it’s like entertainment from YouTube mixed with education
This science live was funny .
THESE LIVES MAKE MY DAY!
amazing science live like always can’t wait for the next one !
This is intersting because it shows how some great education can lead to the inventor of the ethernett foundation!
Great Science Live this week!
Very interesting Science Live! See you next week!
Seeing people always finding ways and solutions for the deaf people, enlightens me everyday! I hope that in the future there will be more opportunities or solutions for the disabled people.
I love science live.
I have so much fun it was the fun tysm
I wish Roger Billings’s influence was talked about more in our media. Everyone talks about the inventors but never the people that add on and improve something that’s just as revolutionary as the original invention/product. Dr. Billings deserves to be talked about more and the world deserves to know about how he improved the Ethernet and helped Bill Gates get a jumpstart on Microsoft with his Billings Computer!
This live was so cool Can’t wait for the next one!
The r51 was peak as always, see yall next week greetings from South africa
It is so cool that we can help deaf people hear.
As someone who uses ethernet every now and then I think this video would be understandable.
The idea of making deaf people hear again or hear for the first time makes my brain explode!
Science live is amazing!
Another informative video! Loved the content!
Love it! This shows how science could serve humanity in many ways!
I’m amazed that people who couldn’t hear will be able to hear now.
I am so happy that there are technologists who are using there expertise to further the medical field.
This was an awesome live! I thought it was entertaining and I also learned a lot! Thank you!
Comment I love science!
cool science live see everyone next weekk !!
how the hub worked is interesting
I think it’d be cool to have a science live talk about Fire!

R51 is very funny!
I had a lot of fun with this class, thank u !
I wish i could see this videos everyday
It’s amazing that as our technology evolves it helps improve lives!
i never thought to save mental notes about random things
it must’ve been super frustrating to have people at the meetings not listen to Dr Billings. I can see how it’s important to keep going, even if people want to put blocks in your way.
I love how they can make a way for deaf people to hear
it was so kind of the researchers to find a way for deaf people to hear this was so inspiring I can’t wait for next week!
A wonderful form to show us how Ethernet can help you out in the real world*
This video was so amazing and funny.
Interesting science live thanks
I like the part where Dr Tobias was talking about the 80s 70s and 90s and lots of other stuff.
Would it be correct to assume that the system used by Dr. Billings to achieve full duplex gigabit ethernet laid the foundation for how modern instant messaging apps function today.
I love ethernet it’s one of my favorite inventions
i love science live 🙂
The human body is so complex and seeing such things like finding a way to add the missing protein to help improve someone’s daily day life makes me appreciate science a little more everyday.
I enjoy learning extra from these videos you share with us. Thank you!
This was an interesting live! See you next week.
Another great live!

i did not know they a treament that could cure deafness
I like this video! What is the internet used for?
That’s interesting! What problem did he solve?
I didn’t know that! Why did people laugh at his idea?
Why don’t we use the same ethernet system you invented and layer it to make 3-D projections And I think a lot of people in Acellus will become inventions. Thank you for Acellus
This video is very helpful!
