IC – Divide by 3
February 25, 2026 • EPISODE 299
How can tiny transistors do math? In this episode of Science LIVE with Roger Billings, discover how integrated circuits use logic gates and on-and-off transistors to multiply, divide, and process numbers. See how a simple “divide by 3” circuit is built—and how millions of these tiny switches working together make today’s powerful computers possible.
Roger Billings also talks about the engineering behind the Falcon 9 from SpaceX. In addition, learn how gallium could be used to generate hydrogen as a clean energy source, highlighting exciting possibilities for future energy innovation.

How spectacular viewing all these awesome things in these Wednesday lives!
Hello from Tennessee!
I thought the binary decade counters were so cool to learn about, and the stereo segment sounds were also pretty interesting.
Hello from Texas! Love these science live videos!
”I am all alone, no one here besides me. but you gotta have friends” 🫏🛸💚💚 (from shrek)
I like that they always pick something new to have on science live
Hi from NY!!
Watching from Arizona!
I love watching these
Hello from Ohio!
science is cool
Mia from Texas can’t believe bacteria is still being discovered
I love learning new things every time I watch Science Live.
I love to learn about science
these are so informative thank you
I really liked the Breakthroughs in Science part about how stereo audio was made. I also liked the Roger Billings section about rockets.
This is the best homeschool program!
Your right. I didn’t like my other schools until my mom signed me up for Acellus. I learn MORE and MORE every day!!!
I agree!!
Science, live is always so fun
Learning about the sound system was really interesting! How do you even find all these cool inventions?
My favorite thing to watch now!
i love watching the live every week im just late this week. Hi from ga
This science live was epic! I wonder what’s gonna happen on the 300th episode. Also please stock the LED fidget spinner thank you. Keep up the great work! -From PA.
the best science movie ever
This is my first time watching. Cool!
is there a limit of power that a potentiomeater can handle
Hi from East Texas
hi Sheldon from Las vegas
Hello from Alabama
heelo, kentucky

Great live! See you next Wednesday.
Science live rules!
Loved todays vid. Super educational
Hi from Tx
Hello from SD!
I love science live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maddie from Texas interesting find a new bacteria
hi from Nebraska
Hi everyone, Anna Akhverdiyeva here from Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Dr. John that was so interesting about the gallium spoon. What are some more interesting facts and abilities of the gallium metal?
With our ever improving technology and innovation, will there ever become a time in the future where humans could visit a planet as far as Neptune?
hi from ri
Hi from Nevada!
a million transmitters is a lot
I loved the area 51 segment, it was very interesting!!
How long would it take to finally reach the biggest number ever, or even count past infinity?
Beautiful Live, relaxing for me after work.
The Science Live was very exciting and informative. I look forward to watching them on a weekly basis.
I thought the experiment with the gallium melting in the water was cool. I wanted to know what else gallium can be used for and can this be useful in the medical field? I thought that the invention Alan Blumlein created is amazing and it is cool that this technology is still being used today. I can’t imagine a movie theater not having stereo. Watching movies at the movie theater or even at home without Blumlein’s invention would be so boring and the music industry would not be advanced as it is today without this technology.
I like science live!!
Radios are so cool
I can’t imagine how listening to stuff would feel like if stereo wasn’t invented and we still had to use mono audio.
this was the best one yet!
hey from TX
I find it interesting how they were able to use stereo sound, which is made by controlling the volume on the speakers to make it seem closer or further. It’s also clever how they used it for symphonies, so that for the listeners, it would sound as if they were actually in front of the performance.
science live is my favorite
Hi from Texas!! 🙂
I love science live. Thank you.
keep up the great work!
Hi From Florida!
Can’t wait to figure out how to put those components to use. Thanks for another fantastic Science Live!
I enjoyed watching!
Great ScienceLive, Thank you for this 🙂
Hi from NM!
all for science live!!!
Love the video, very interesting
The cowboys were hilarious!
Great episode as always!!!
enjoyed every second
Todays science live made me laugh a lot!
watching from ohio
science is the best
watching from nc
Loved today’s episode.
Hi from NY!
Learning about the new bacteria for cancer was cool, but my immediate thoughts went to what’s the side effects!! Very useful tool though, hoping for minimal side effects with it.
Another great live!
hi i am from Arkansas.
is it just me or does R-51 look like Roger Billings?
The Proteges, David, and Caleb did really good this episode, thanks for teaching about how to make IC counter circuit that can divide by three.
Gallium looks cool to play with and also it’s cool that it melts when it’s warmer than room temperature. (:
It was really interesting how the proteges use the divider to divide. I would like to learn everything about the Divider circuit.
I really enjoyed seeing the different rockets. I also liked watching the integrated circuits.
How does the gallium method of obtaining hydrogen compare to other hydrogen obtaining methods with the expensive catalysts. Is it cheaper and more efficient, or does the alternative methods beat this new method?
I really enjoyed the protégés and ventioneres clash in the video. It was really funny.
love the Wild West
I’m new and this is my first science live but I learned a lot about IC’s and I never knew that you could use them to solve division equations.
Thank you science live for telling us about todays stuff! My favorite thing is space, Nasa telling us stuff right now and or in the future. Thank you acellus!
The resistors topic was really fascinating, Humans have made so many things like it that we rarely think about these days.
Dr Roger Billings-“well he always hallucinates” 😂 hahaha
It is so amazing how a spoon can melt in water.
AMAZING LIVE CAN’T WAIT FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY!
I like The Good the Bad and the Ugly music!
I find it confounding that something as simple as a calculator can be so complicated, I hope to meet you someday Dr. Billings
I enjoyed the wild west skit, it made learning about circuits fun, and the accents were funny too.
R-51 should stick around a little longer sometimes! Thank you for another awesome Science Live!
Space X rockets are so cool and R51 is so funny!
Comment I like learning about the audio in the 1930’s
Thank you!! I enjoyed the Live and of course, R51
Nice live! Learning really is important, and math is useful in many things.
I love area 51! he is so funny!
Could the thrusters on a rocket be condensed to a smaller size?
How many electrical components are in a circuit board?
I love science live!!!
Hey from California!!! The protégés and inventioners are really fun. Thanks!
I could imagine how did the people felt when seeing the movie from walt disney
I Love science live!
I love my record player! Thank you for tonight’s stream! It was great!
Thank you for this week’s lesson! I love learning new things
I liked the segment on binary decade counter
loved the live, only 1 more till the 300th one!
I love learning new things each week!
I hope the new cancer treatment will help many people with cancer.
Hello from WV! Actually, movies can be very informative, depending on what movie you choose! Sorry for the lack of questions and comments, but I just didn’t have anything to add to the conversation for any of the topics in today’s meeting, but nonetheless this meeting was still very fun! Good Science Live, see you next week!
Hi from Florida!
Do you think that cancer can be more locally dispelled of in the future?
Hi from SC
I loved this science Live! Loved listening to R51😂
R 51is so funny.
The scanner was so cool!
