Binary Decade Counter

February 18, 2026  •  EPISODE 298

How do integrated circuits actually work? In this episode of Science LIVE with Roger Billings, explore the fundamentals of integrated circuits with a closer look at a binary decade counter and how it processes and counts electrical signals.

Learn more about the Acellus Robot Dance Contest and Acellus World, coming to Kansas City in May 2026! And get ready to discover fascinating science in the natural world—from hydrophobic spiders that repel water to the surprising fact that rainbows include invisible colors beyond what our eyes can see.

What if my dog ate my science fair idea? 🙂 A joke, clearly, but boy is thinking of new ideas harder than it seems! I hope everyone who is participating is coming along with their projects!

My favorite thing was learning about the water spiders. They make little air bubbles to breath under water, and they reflect water off their body to float. I always like R-51.

    Reply
  27. Gabriel

I liked the hydrophobic metal that can float by small cuts and holes in it. It seems to go against logic because metal is heavier than water, but by making cuts, air is trapped against the metal. The air adds buoyancy allowing the metal to float.

I made up my own word too – “thinkability”. If you’re doing something like coloring, you can think a lot about something else while you’re doing it. That activity has high thinkability. But if you’re doing something like chess, you can’t think about other things while doing it. That has very low thinkability. Thinkability is the measure of how much thinking room your brain has while you do an activity.
