Tuned Radio
January 28, 2026 • EPISODE 295
How do radios tune in to specific stations? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings explores the tuned radio—how circuits are adjusted to select particular frequencies so we can hear one station clearly among many. Learn why tuning is essential for radio reception and how the first wireless radio signal crossed the Atlantic Ocean, launching a new era of global communication.

The radio was cool to learn about!
Hi! It was cool to learn more about radios.
That lady who made all those notes for the computer that helped us get to the moon (forgot her name already) must have really loved the moon or computers. I can’t believe she still had both hands in the picture. Congrats to her for writing so much and being proud of her work.
Very good video loved it can’t believe radios evolved so much
This is so cool i love this!
Hi from Maryland, love the lives!
Thank you for this science live!

Thank you so much for teaching us about Guglielmo Marconi and how he was able to send morse code over long distances! I can’t wait for the next Science Live!
I always listen to the radio in the car, never realized it was that complex to make!
Amazing what things people think of to create, like a computer in a string, wow!
Thank goodness for radios
Would washing machine not ruine the transistor
very cool live! i love to learn the history behind things!
I couldn’t live without wifi!
Love watching these lives
I want the r-51 radio as a sicence fair project where we can build it and make our our chanel.
I’m surprised that wifi produced that much higher frequency than a tv/radio station.
I want the r-51 radio as a sicence fair project where we can build it and make our our chanel.
I really enjoy science live every week!
How was the radio invented?
Will there be a significant increase or decrease in size, function, price, production, and/or quality when/if devices are made with their circuits inside of wires? Or, will it be the same but easier to create and profit off of?
How small is the computer string.
What company or area of expertise made the nano thread.
I like how fun these videos are. They really draw the audience in.
So cool, I love the radio!
This was really cool!
I think the internet joke at the start was pretty funny!
Radios are really cool!
Who was the first investor that we know of
I want to build my own radio Mr. Billings. Can you please add to the shop?
I like the wire that can’t break. It’s really cool!
The interesting thing to me is that with new innovations someone had to create the idea in the first place. How would you even think to check and see if radio waves or internet would work?
SO AWESOME!!!!!
I absolutely love this
The evolution of the radio is super cool!
Very interesting! A lot more complex than I thought.
Love these lives can’t wait for next weeks live
I always thought the word WiFi was an abbreviation for something. Now I know that it was just made up by a marketing firm.
The fact that you just need to change just a little from Mhz is really suprising
love that these are recorded so we can catch up when needed
Hi from Florida! I really loved this episode! R-51 is so funny and is quite silly (as always) thank you for this remarkable episode! Can’t wait for the next 🙂
Hi from MI <3 love the weekly lives!
I wonder how radio will further evolve!
how long did it take to create wifi?
it was awesome learning about vaccum tubes and how tv started .
I always was intrigued by how signals work, and allow us to enjoy music and use use cell phones.
My favorite lines:
The R51 radio: “This is radio R51 weather channel, and today the weather is… You’re not gonna believe it.. It’s outside it’s not in here.”
R51 radio: “This is R51 super radio coming in news bulletin blah blah blah bl blah.”
This was fun to watch! Thank you!!
It’s pretty interesting how we switched from vacuum tubes to computer chips.
Love radios – never knew how to make one though

EXCELLENT science live!! I just looked up the foxhole radio kit, So many interesting things were covered and highly entertaining as always. But with even more laughs this time. Well done!!
I love watching the lives
I love these inventions!
Will you always be able to do the lives? i love watching them!
Radios need a good satellite or communication system so we tune into them and allows them to work. Oys amazing how far radios have come to where you can have satellite radio.
Louisiana!! Loved this live
I love Acellus
I love science live
the jokes at the beginning of the video were great, i also enjoyed learning about the history of inventors!

I never realized how complex yet simple radios were to construct!
I like listening to the radio on road trips
The evolution of the radio was so interesting to hear about!
I used a radio before, I talked to someone in Ohio once!
I think the idea of a computer chip in a thread is so amazing. With all of the technology we have available now, I can certainly see smart clothing coming in the future.
So much has changed in the world. & It is crazy to see what more is changing
hi from katy tx!
Wi-Fi is named after nothing, that’s really cool now that I realize it. Its just so catchy you would think it means something
I always enjoy the different electrical examples you show each week!
micro computers are amazing and I think they’ll help us a lot in the future
This was amazing
This episode was fun to watch.
i found a radio in my favorite video game once
Loved this live 🫶

Awesome and entertaining as always!
Never knew radios were that complex. Great vid.
this is great!! i love science and i think this could help many people feel the same way
these are always so fun to watch
The Protégés were hilarious as usual, but, the song that they sang was familiar.
It’s the Wellerman song!
Winter butterflies are so cool!
My Grandma has a speaker at her house which is also an FM Radio, those types of speakers are hard to come across now a days!
Yes make the kits available.
It is so funny how Wi-Fi wasn’t even originally named after anything specific, it was just a name that it’s inventors came up with at the time!
I thought radios are something only certain people can make, not just anyone from there house with household items!
There’s video was fun and awesome
Yay! I laughed at the TP unboxing video part
Fiber tech sounds super cool and useful, however I can’t help but wondering if it would affect the body in any way to have all of these signals and frequencies be so close to it for a long period of time.
This episode was very interesting!
It’s amazing how technology has been able to make things so compact.
Will old tune style radios still work?
This video was fun and awesome
the concept of wifi is really cool
Radio waves are cool
Radios have been monumental for communication; it’s amazing to see how it works!
Do you have to tune into all radio stations?
I used to listen to the radio with my grandpa.
Acellus has helped me so much!
Does Roger billing know Elon Musk?
I love learning and watching these
It’s interesting how a lot of things in science and technology are connected, how Wifi works is so interesting, radios too.
I love science so much
hello from kansas this is my first time watching science live it’s pretty cool ngl
I think that the radio would be a great idea to add to the coin store!
I would really like a course on flying helicopters and a r-51 radio in the gold store.
I enjoy learning how radios tune into certain stations.
Radios are one of my favorite inventions!
Acellus Academy has grown so much and I am so happy for that!!!
Wi-Fi is incredible!
Amazing science live! Can’t wait for the next one.
Shoutout radios. great video today
So I am really not sure about “smart” clothing , but I can imagine how powerful “thread” technology would be in improving devices used in the medical field. I am also glad they thought about shorting that kind of weird name to simply Wi-Fi. My idea on the concept of radio is certainly expanding.
I really liked this science live video. The computer thread was really interesting and so was the tuned radio segment.
I like when Dr. John talked about the tiny computer wires
r51 was funny
I really enjoyed this one.
I used to have a little radio my dad gave me I was scared of sleeping in silence so I would always turn it on at night when i was like 5 or 6?
This will be interesting. Our car has a transmitter plugged in to be hands free for speaker phone and playing music from a phone. It uses a radio channel to work and sometimes we have to change the channel for it to work right.
So basically like AUX mode right where you plug it into your phone and it plays from the speakers in the car? That’s what mine does.
Did the radio that the proteges made work?
That computer string is very cool!
Lol winter butterflies.
Radios are mind blowing
Science live rocks! -Alabama!
will tuned radios be needed in the future that would be crazy if they wouldn’t
This is explained very well
R51’s butterflys were very funny and the thread with computer technology in it is very interesting.
I am thankful for radios, it helps us communicate and hear what may be going on around us. I think would be cool to create one at home as a project. It would be rewarding. Also, I think it’s important to have a mentor that you can look up to and also know they care about you too. We all learn differently and at different paces and to have someone care makes a big difference. Every one should take a social emotional class and maybe it could help them learn how to be and not to be as well or give some self reflection and inspire to help and care for others.
What causes the different coils to transmit specific frequencies?
i love radios so glad i got to see a video about it!
i love fishing a smart fishing line would be cool
The way things evolve over time is so cool!
WiFi seems much simpler now…
Hello, my name is Jacob. I especially liked the part about the smart clothes. I found the part about the brain implants fascinating too. Anyway, thank you for the knowledge.
I think radios are soooooo cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Definitely put one in the store.
Science lives are always entertaining!
Radios are super cool, can’t for the next one!
Radios and radio waves are a super interesting concept to me
I am very grateful to be able to watch these informative science live videos!!
Hello, Acellus Team & Dr. Billings! I appreciate how all of you create a series of episodes revolving around one subject. It is helpful to us students who want more extensive learning sessions. Thank you!
Excited about another science live
It is crazy how you can a computer in a thread!
I like how most of these videos are explained to where I can actually understand it.
R-51 always makes me laugh. His voice is so funny 😂
I havent listened to a radio in a few years, interesting to revisit
I can’t get enough of science live!
My favorite part of the whole thing was Mr. Tobias’s axe deodorant jokes! That’s great stuff!
Cool to learn about radios.
Could smart clothes be a normal thing in the future?
How does a radio antenna receive radio waves?
I love these science lives!
Is it hard to get all the little computers in one little strand?
Super cool, as always!
