Tuned Radio
January 28, 2026 • EPISODE 295
How do radios tune in to specific stations? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings explores the tuned radio—how circuits are adjusted to select particular frequencies so we can hear one station clearly among many. Learn why tuning is essential for radio reception and how the first wireless radio signal crossed the Atlantic Ocean, launching a new era of global communication.

very interesting SL, love learning about radios.
The science live is very informative!
So cool how they made their own radio! Might make one for myself… 🙂
Hehe I love the butterflies! R51 is R51 XD
Thanks for the Live! This was another good one. 🙂
this is very cool to learn!!
I really enjoyed learning about the radios and “computer threads”
yeah when was the very very first radio made I wonder? 🤔
I like the idea of adding the radio to the gold store. I say do it!
Y’all are so funny thank you for everything thank you
In the live it talked about a computer thread wire in a computer and the thread wire was on the computer. So then it also talked about a thread being in a computer and the thread being in the computer on.
I find it cool what they called WI FI before they named it WI FI.
I got snow here! I loved sitting cozy inside while watching science live.
I would like to have that kit in the store
This is so interesting cant wait for next weeks!!
I’ve never enjoyed a Science Live so much!
im going to trying my a radio. This was very interesting.
Thank you so much for sharing!!
It’s really interesting how Wi-Fi was originally I triple e 802.11 and how there was really no explanation for the name that they chose.
I still use my radio to listen to music and sports games
Radios are amazing
A “do-it-yourself” radio kit sounds like a fun project!! 🙂
I look forward to science live
i like the wi-fi part.
Yes I want to build it (the radio)
Thanks for a great lesson
I didn’t know that wifi worked like that!
Dr. Tobias, do you think the scientist in Australia could have made his black hole technology better with Wi-Fi?
I like the computer line thing.
Communication and entertainment is always going to continue to grow. Look how far it’s come since our grandparents were teenagers? Back then they only had newspapers and telegraphs. Then came the landline and radio. Now we have the Internet an instant messaging. Thankful to all the inventors who help us communicate and listen to music today.
This video was awesome!
Wow! The radio is so cool and I think it would be fun to make one. Y’all should definitely add it to the store.
It was so funny when he said “Inventioneers, assemble!!!” then he got sunglasses XD. And so unexpected the Wellerman sea shanty
Dr. Billings, can there be other stations on the R51 radio box, so we can listen to actual radio?
Its cool how much technology has up graded. Whats also cool is how they ran the cord over with a truck and they were still able to use it.
I thought it was cool that a thread has computer chips on it and can be used on new computers.
I can’t imagine what we could make with that micro chip string stuff
Always love learning new stuff from these Awesome videos. Thank you for always making these so interesting and I always Learn something new
Thank Acellus. Never knew how the radio was made.
Never knew how radio was created. Thanks Acellus.
Science just keeps getting better and better. I wonder how the next generation will listen to music and talk radio?
Science live is the best thing out of the school year so far I love it 🙂
It’s crazy how smart some people are, how do they come up with that stuff!
Tobias’s jokes lol. watching from SC!!
Hi from Buffalo NY!
Science Live is so cool!
I believe thats how science should be. We learn more and more as we go. Science should continue to get more and more in-depth as we develop better and better technology. So radio was huge back then, but now we have wifi and satellite.
I find it cool that WI FI had a lot of problems when it first came out.
I think it was cool to see them make a homemade radio.
Cool never thought that radios were so complicated hahah
That computer thread is awesome. I need a shirt made with that.
How did humans even discover radio waves if they aren’t visible?
The amount of time scientists fail at their experiments and keep going like Marcony shows that they are more determined than most people to keep going after their dreams. The cable breaking in the ocean and his first tower being destroyed by a storm and still going is a great story of perseverance.
Watching from ohio
When was the first radio made?
1895! By Guglielmo Marconi
The first radio was made in 1895 by Guglielmo Marconi . Although in 1893 Nikola Tesla demonstrated the first wireless transmission.

LOVEEE THE SCIENCE LIVEEE
Wow having a brain technology implant would really help a lot of people would it be a chip and implanted during surgery? Some people really go above and beyond to study things learning more about the black holes would be interesting yet scary because you have to go to space. Yes wifi has really changed over the years.
Agreed, it helped me larn so much!
I liked learning about the computer threads and all of their potential uses.
Wow making transistors really small could really help make a lot of things. Computer processes are going to get a lot more interesting now that’s really cool.
