Tuned Radio
January 28, 2026 • EPISODE 295
How do radios tune in to specific stations? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings explores the tuned radio—how circuits are adjusted to select particular frequencies so we can hear one station clearly among many. Learn why tuning is essential for radio reception and how the first wireless radio signal crossed the Atlantic Ocean, launching a new era of global communication.

r-51 is so funny. being able to have a like whole computer in a thread is crazy!! but so cool.
It’s nice to see how tech advances overtime.
This was so much fun! Can’t wait to learn more things about these science lives..
Science live is awesome!
Hello from kentucky
I would love to receive R51 anywhere! I hope you have a great rest of your week!
I like the idea of assembling a radio, but I would much rather it be something concerning morse code, or something that I could put to practical use as an older student.
Hello from MS
How will computers be in the future?
I really enjoy science live technology spotlight.
I love this episode was about Tuned radios.
I’m interested in buying the R-51 radio with gold credits.
I hope the protégé’s get there own course some day!!
Technology is the future
This was hands down one of the best science lives I have watched! having the radio explained to us was really cool to learn about! I was laughing when there was an unboxing being done in the middle of a radio being built!
Hi from Louisiana!
This is my favorite one so far!!!!!
Hi It’s Daisy from Virginia, I hope everyone is staying warm. I have the flu but had to jump on and see Mr Billings he’s so interesting and funny
This was so interesting I love these science lives.
I loved this weeks science live!
I love accelus so much. It helps me very much!
The Proteges are awesome!
Hello from Kansas! Another great science live!
I think it would good if everyone does this for a science project. I hope they will show the results of the students projects to see how they turned out.
HI from TEXAS with my sister!
HI from TEXAS!
I loved learning about radios in the recent science lives. The protege segment was both informative and comedic and I look forward to seeing R51 every week!
This science live was awesome 😀
That computer sounds so amazing
I hope everyone who was also in this last ice storm is alright, and I hope y’all’s power is back on. May God bless you.
A computer in a string-like thread is so cool to think about
thank you for all the information hi from florida
Another great live! Love watching and learning new things!
That’s why tuned radios were invented.
My favorite part of science live is the technology spotlight. The computer thread is very interesting, I love the new things people invent!💻
Yes to the radio
thank you so much for this lesson! 😏
I had no idea that a thread can be a computer, that will make things so much easier.
It’s impressful that they turned a computer thread into a knot.
Wow this was very interesting and i really loved the butterfly part im excited to see next weeks!
I did not know that hertz referred to the genius who inspired Marconi to invent radio.
I thought it was impressive to turn a computer chip into a thread.
i loved the butterflies
I think radios are neat.
That was so funny about getting the weather reports from each other!😂
I had no idea the word hertz we use was the name of the predecessor for the development of radio.
The buildable radio would be an awesome idea to put into the gold store. The proteges were my favorite part in todays Science Live.
hearing from area 51 was soooo cool!
This was very interesting, I enjoy listening every week. Can’t wait for more!
One of the best videos yet to teach us about science!
Watching science live even while traveling is amazing
How much is a block of gold worth today?
do you get paid for inventions
I love science live!
Excited for Science live- ZoeyC
Hey from snowmaggedon ’26 in West Tennessee.
I liked learning about the history of wireless communication.
Loved this! Especially the talk of WiFi
i think its cool you can put computer data in a thread.
i love watching science live every week!
with the computer thread do you think they can make purses? Or even have a 3d holograms come out of the string?
this was one of the coolest thing ever it’s crazy
This was informative. I really liked this one!
Who came up with the idea of the computer wire?
Science live is amazing tysm for providing this for us😛😛
It was interesting how Mark create the radio of r51, and the more radio can send messages far away.
Thank you. Learned a lot
The explanation of how radio waves can be specifically directed to one area was fascinating!
I love science live!!!
I learned so much from this science live.
I loved the inventioneers! It was fun to learn from them and watch their little skit!
Loved the pirate sea shanty part
This one was interesting
🎶There once was a ship that put to sea🎶
Thanks for the science live!!
the computer thread almost looks like dna
Hey, how awesome would it be if these “smart threads” were used for valuables, such as being able to track luggages, or watches, and other valuables if they were missing. I love how they were inspired for the rolls of computer thread from food, like sushi rolls. Always love Tobias’ jokes, they crack me up!
Hi from Virginia
This was a good one
I love the Protojes!!!
tuning into science live from the state of NC
Thanks for another entertaining and informative science live!
Thanks for sharing, I have learned so much from Science Live!!!
hello and thank you from Montana
Hi from Indiana
Amazing episode! I found it really interesting
Love from wisconsin!
I’ve learned so much from science live
its really cool on how tuned radio’s work
Hello from FL!
Hi from Tampa/Florida
wow that would be crazy to have electronically made clothes!!
Interesting video love learning
I really like that the protege’s are always telling us about radio’s. I am still trying to understand stand science and I am kinda getting the hang of science live, I would love to buy the tuned radio that r 51 and mark made I think it would be really cool. I also have a question for dr. Paje, my question is is it possible you can make mor videos about being more selfless? The question I had for Dr.billings do radios have some kind of signal that helps poeple understand the text message from far away?l
science live always teaches me new things. love it 🙂
I love Science Live!
How far could the original morse code tranmitter go?
I learned a lot from this
hello from Tampa/Florida I’m really liking these videos
The Morris code was cool
I love science live
I think its cool beacues it talks about a lot of cool things
How much will comeputers evolve.
Thanks for sharing great news every week!😃
Yes, it is amazing that you could have a computer literally on your fingertips! The proteges are sooo funny!!
The science live was incredibly interesting today!

I love watching this !
I like science live. From Illinois
Nice video! cant wait for more. From Texas,
I love these lives!!!
coool I like the proteges
How did they figure out the right frequency for the radio? Did they go through many frequencies to figure out which one worked right?
Hello from Louisiana
How exactly does the wire activate electrical pulses to the coil by rotating the wire? What is the Science behind controlling electricity like that?
I wish I could have a glove like that
Having sleek smart cloth or thin VR gloves is cool!
I did not know wifi is as old as 1990
