How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

What mental processes do successful inventors use when turning ideas into inventions?
I would be happy to learn Morse code.
Disney robots that fall with style? now THAT is cool! along with how it could potentially replace people in costumes, it seems like a good invention!
The very first email, interesting that email has dated that far back since the 1970s! and also i believe that 80% of the emails sent are either scams, or spam emails lol
communication over wires and sending messages over long distances, back then it must have been such a cool thing to have! but i am certainly excited by the future of communication!
Inventing is such a cool way to be creative and it would be super cool to make an invention someday! Also R-51 is so funny he’s definetly one of my favorite people.

YES! It would be neat very to have Morse Code added to the curriculum. I would be interested in learning this.
I enjoyed Dr. John’s the segment with the robot.
My dad used to be a 911 dispatcher and he always used ten codes. Morse code reminds me of ten codes in a sense that they’re both used to translate important messages without using plain words.
Robots are neat!
Problem then solution= Invention
Training robots to fall like people is very impressive. Really goes to show how they’re steadily becoming more and more human-like, whether we like it or not.
