Radio Waves
November 12, 2025 • EPISODE 286
How do invisible waves travel across the world and beyond? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings dives into the fascinating science of radio waves—how they’re created, how they move through space, and how they make long-distance communication possible. From the basics of frequency and transmission to early breakthroughs like Morse code and modern applications such as HAM radio and space communication, join us as we explore the hidden currents that keep us connected.

That was really awesome. Thank you for science live !!😀🤩😄
I like how NASA searched for a watch that could withstand the harsh conditions of space travel. Omega’s Speedmaster watch was chosen out of four watches. The watch’s reliability was crucial for the astronauts’ survival, earning it the Snoopy award from NASA astronauts.
I liked the space badges and space suits and want one of my own some day. I also really like R-51.
I loved watching the coral and how it emitted a bunch of cool colors. Love Science Live
I think the portion about Morse code was so cool especially the part about S.O.S. That could let me call for help some day
I am checking back in to say WE NEED ONE OF THE MARS LIZARDS IN THE STORE!!! it would be so cool 🙂 🙂
It’s wild how signals can travel across the universe like little cosmic messages!
Loved it!! I always enjoy these lives!
This is my first Science Live but I really enjoyed it!
The coral was so beautiful. I wish I could see it up close in person! I also enjoyed the technology spotlight as always.
It was amazing that the Omega wrist watch passed all those tests! And that it made it to the moon and still worked,
I enjoy listening to D. John and his Technology Spotlight. He always has something cool to share.
I loved science live and I say yes yes yes! to the aviation classes, I have been interested in air planes my hole life and always thought I would go to I.S.T and ask you to teach me but the sooner the better!
I loved Science Live this week, thank you!!
Consistency is key for learning in life. Practice, practice, practice.
Hello from Connecticut, science live is my favorite part of the week
when will the shirts be in the store?
I love all of the colors in corals
I love watching these science live episodes
I got to see the northern lights in Maryland! So cool!
The Northern light was also in Alabama!!! So cool!
this is amazing i love science!
How quickly do radio waves travel in space?
Radio waves are so cool, it’s crazy how they were discovered and we can’t even see them!
I’ve always liked the science live topics! Radio waves can be really interesting!
Science Live in one of my favorite things about Acellus.
it’s cool how radios can pick out one signal even though tons of radio waves are around us.
This was a cool episode of Science Live
I think radios are so cool! I have never saw one before! I like that picture of Dr. Billings! He looks so cool!
Where is morse code most used today?
I really liked learning about ham radios and would like to have a class on how to build one!
These lives are so fun to watch!
I wonder how much time she spent in study daily?
I love all the interesting information you give us each week. Who would have thought Astronauts need watches in space.
Why and how are the northern lights different colors?
How do radio waves work I want to know about it.
I would like to experience Ham Radio by myself one day!
How did Thomas Edison develop the practical incandescent light bulb, and what challenges did he face during the invention process?
Study hard and study often!

I love how the coral looked like flowers and the colors are beautiful!
How much does the Omega watch that was worn on the moon cost?
Saw the Northern lights last night!!
I love science live! Do the lights change color depending on what wave length?
I never stopped to think about how everything astronauts do needs to be timed!
Time was of the essence when NASA traveled to the moon. They asked for watches that would withstand their journey, and had four different options. They tested three options because one was a pocket watch, which isn’t what they asked for. The third watch they tested was the only one that worked!
Science live is a fun source of entertainment!
I love watching Science Live!
Always keep a close eye on those daily goals into completing each class! So cool how it estimates your projection of completion.
science live is the best!!!!
I love how hw got to meet a person who got a perfect scores and graduated all because of a constent study routine. I also like how we learned about the hammer coral and they way it works.
Radios are cool 😎
Science Live is very interesting, Dr B breaks it down for very easy understanding. He definitely keeps your attention.

Science live was so cool today
We saw the Northern Lights in Colorado.
RAIDOS I’ve always wanted to learn about them 😀
Great Science Live today. I didn’t know astronauts wore those type of watches that was awesome to know.
Science Live is so interesting! I think it is super important to research before you do any experimenting.
I didn’t know that FM radio has a better frequency than AM radio
I’m glad science live exists! There’s so many cool things, like radio waves, I probably wouldn’t have learned about otherwise.
Hello from Las Vegas! Always fun watching Science Live.
Your guys’ excitement is almost making me excited! Saw the Northern Lights here in Liberty Utah too.
Is that why AM radio is mostly talk radio? Because talking doesn’t have a wide range of high and low sounds?
Hello, Jonathan here, I thought this was very Interesting. I would also be interested in a Morse Code class, and a Helicopter class. Those would be cool!
Science live always makes me think more in depth about things
I really loved the northern light that were visible 2 days ago I love Acellus live

Watching sciencelive gives me so much knowledge each week.
This science live was so good, and the pilot course would be awesome.
@Scarlett:
Morse code isn’t difficult to learn!
Well, it depends on where you get the info from.
For instance, I learned Morse code in my dad’s dictionary that he gifted to me and my big sister!
My favorite time of the week is when I can watch science live.
I want to use radio waves to reach Mars :).
An aviation class would be so cool!! Looking forward to it!

i really enjoy learning on accelius
When I go to space im going to wear omega watch
I think this is one of my favorite science lives! I loved hearing about the Omega watch, and was very surprised to learn just how far HAM radio’s reach. I wonder how you would go about getting a HAM radio license and what the requirements would be? Also I would love to have a morse code class!
We learned about radio waves and frequency at the science museum here!
hello friends, I think it would be great if you created a program for becoming a pilot! Loved todays science live as always. 😉
I can’t imagine the pressure the astronauts must’ve had trying to get the timing right
Love this one! Thank you Accelus!
Science live is the Best!
I liked the part about Morse code. I think that is super interesting. I also enjoyed hearing about the watches used in space.
How does the transmitter work? Loved the show!
What is the recent cause for our Northern lights? I’ve also always wanted to learn Morse code.
I do learn better if I do my work every day
how did they find out about diamonds being useful for semi conductors
I want an omega watch
I love science!
Science Live is always so fun and engaging! Thank y’all so much for everything that y’all do!

Morse code sounds cool to learn
What is “R” for Morse code?
I thought it was very cool to learn about radio waves and how far they can go.
Dr. John is one of my coding teachers!
This was a wonderful lecture!
As always, I get so excited about the new discoveries that I make during our weekly lecture and today, specifically, I learned about setting short goals so I accomplish consistently, about lasers with John, the importance of a specific type of clock, the omega clock, with Tobias and also listened about Roger Billings first contact with radio station, morse codes and learned about radio waves as well.
I could spend more time talking about each one of these topics, but this is all the time that we have for… THANK YOU!
Do they still use the Omega Watch for races?
The fluorescent coral looks so cool. I would love to learn more about it.
how far could a radio wave potentially reach
The story about the omega watch was really awesome!
