Radio Waves
November 12, 2025 • EPISODE 286
How do invisible waves travel across the world and beyond? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings dives into the fascinating science of radio waves—how they’re created, how they move through space, and how they make long-distance communication possible. From the basics of frequency and transmission to early breakthroughs like Morse code and modern applications such as HAM radio and space communication, join us as we explore the hidden currents that keep us connected.

I love science live so much! It teaches me so much and it’s very fun to watch also.
I absolutely loved the HAM radio segment!
We went to NASA and we learned about all the food they eat in space, but I didn’t know about the watch. That’s cool!
Love y’all’s video’s lol!!!
Radio waves are cool to learn about. Mr. Billings is a great and smart guy.
That was a great lesson! Thank you so much DrB
Thank you for the most amazing lesson Dr B
This live has been my favorite I think so far I love how the radio waves move and work.
My cousin and I live a few miles apart so we use CB radios to talk sometimes. It’s so fun!
I think the coral and dyes were amazing! The coral was out of the park! The dyes were so florescent, and they were so bright!
I love science live. Morse code is so cool
The coral and dyes are amazing under the black and blue lights! Could those things be used on clothes or items if so then could they also be used in science and medical experiments?
I agree with Dr. Joshua on studying daily and not have a day or a week in between studying sessions I also really want Tod edemen to have a class on conspiracy and I love science live!
If two radio waves perfectly cancel each other, where does the energy go?
I think it would be fun to own and to operate a ham radio.
I love these lives. They are the highlight of my week
I thought it was interesting that the the Speedmaster Omega, was able to accomplish such difficult tasks and still stand.
Dr. Roger Billings science live videos have been very interesting to watch.
Science live rocks!! It’s always fun watching and listening to all the interesting facts and theorys.
I love Science Live.💙 I love Dr. Roger Billings story about radio waves. I would take the course about radio waves!:)
I never know that, do do do means “S” till just now
I WANT A SNOOPY WATCH. HYDROGEN IS VERY INTERESTING. I LOVE LASERS AND WANT TO WORK FOR NASA.
The watches in space being the only way to tell time after the failure and needing it to be accurate to make it back to Earth would be scary. Good thing they’re professionals.
Thank you so much for another wonderful video! The amazing Intel Tobias shared on the watch was extremely interesting along with what Dr. B shared regarding the northern lights! Wow! That’s amazing! And, the insight Dr. B shared on radio waves is Magnificent. Thank you!
SCIENCE LIVE IS THE BEST I LOVE IT
I limed the part where he talked about Ham Radio. I bring this up because my dad and I are interested in Ham radio
I love the Northen lights and have seen them a few times. I also love the maroon sweater and the necklace.
How would you communicate with a quantum computer in space?
When did they discover that you can use lasers to cool things rather than heat them up?
That’s so cool! I didn’t know that coral could be fluorescent.
I have always wanted to learn Morse code. I agree that it would be interesting to have a class option for students interested in becoming a pilot. Thank you for sharing the shirt designs too—they look amazing!
Thank you for always listening to your students ( new class ideas) . We appreciate you!
how long does it take to learn Morse code
It would be so interesting to learn morse code.
I have always wanted to be an AIR Force pilot or a National Geographic Photographer.
I think a Piloting class would be an amazing course. Over.
My favorite part about the video was when they where talking about Apollo 11 and NASA and the omega watch because buzz aldrin and Neil armstrong wore the Omega watch and that is pretty cool because I did not know that and I love space.
I just love watching Roger Billings, hes so smart
I saw the northern lights in Wyoming aswell.
I’m glad you showed us what SOS is in Morse code, I hope we’ll remember it if we need it someday.
I loved this live, I love learning about radio waves.
this show is so fun to watch every week
The flourescent colors look cool
Radios are always a facinating subject. From how control centers work, to how mobile radios pick up signals, and even the science behind actual radio waves themselves, I always seem to learn something new every time I’m taught about radios. I didn’t know that radio tower’s hights were specially calibrated to the length of radio waves they send out. I wonder if I could learn morse code?
Yes on the aviation courses and yes on the radio and morse code courses! Acellus just keeps getting better and better!
I liked learning about the moon❣️
The coral looks so beautiful! I love Science Live!

I would like to learn morse code.
I love the ham radio idea!
I didn’t know that the radio waves are created from such a small device

I took pictures of the Northern Lights here in Nebraska!
I LOVE THE PART WITH R51
How cool to learn about the radio waves! and the picture of Dr. Roger Billings???
It’s incredible how something as small as a wrist watch could save countless lives and be apart of one of the most extraordinary, mind blowing, life changing projects the world has ever known. Our moon is seen by all of us on this planet, and with NASA’s help, we were able to discover much more than what the surface our eyes meet. But not just NASA, also Omega. Naming the prestige award granted for assisting the astronauts Snoopy is also adorable. I’m sure it was literally the most terrifying thing to hear only 14 seconds could mean you live or die. So thank you to those investors and scientists who created an object that could savor the time, withstand multiple unnatural conditions, and most importantly, keep something as precious as our human lives safer. 🙂↕️
Dr. John, your part is always my favorite! We have corals in our fishtank
Thank you for another great live! I would love to see the northern lights in person some day.

I couldn’t see the northern lights from where i was from 🙁
Science Live and radio waves rule!
I looked at the northern lights.
You should definitely do a ham radio and pilots course
R 51s THE BEST OF THEM ALL
I learned coral can make different florescent colors.
How does Mr. Roger know so much about so many subjects? How does he remember everything he’s learned throughout life
These videos are so fun to watch. Thanks Dr. Billings.
Studying everyday will help me succeed.
It’s nice that you can see when you will possibly be done with your class.
In Morse code, is it only used in English? Or is there alternative versions for other languages?
I love science live!
Didn’t get to see any northern lights unfortunately
Enjoyed this weeks science live!

How does the frequency and wavelength of a radio wave determine it’s properties and uses?
Is Morse code often used in different languages?
What other watches did the Omega company design?
I’ve learned so much about AM and FM. Thanks Acellus
yesterday the northern lights were out where my house is but we are out of town and I did not get to see them. I think it was really cool to see pictures of.
Its so interesting how lasers don’t just make things hot !
I remember learning SOS in morse code when I was in elementary school and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was also wondering how someone comes up with something like morse code, just thinking about it is so interesting!
Can we do more contests like the t shirt designing one?
Is Morse code still used a lot?
