Radio Waves

November 12, 2025  •  EPISODE 286

How do invisible waves travel across the world and beyond? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings dives into the fascinating science of radio waves—how they’re created, how they move through space, and how they make long-distance communication possible. From the basics of frequency and transmission to early breakthroughs like Morse code and modern applications such as HAM radio and space communication, join us as we explore the hidden currents that keep us connected.

Radios are always a facinating subject. From how control centers work, to how mobile radios pick up signals, and even the science behind actual radio waves themselves, I always seem to learn something new every time I’m taught about radios. I didn’t know that radio tower’s hights were specially calibrated to the length of radio waves they send out. I wonder if I could learn morse code?

It’s incredible how something as small as a wrist watch could save countless lives and be apart of one of the most extraordinary, mind blowing, life changing projects the world has ever known. Our moon is seen by all of us on this planet, and with NASA’s help, we were able to discover much more than what the surface our eyes meet. But not just NASA, also Omega. Naming the prestige award granted for assisting the astronauts Snoopy is also adorable. I’m sure it was literally the most terrifying thing to hear only 14 seconds could mean you live or die. So thank you to those investors and scientists who created an object that could savor the time, withstand multiple unnatural conditions, and most importantly, keep something as precious as our human lives safer. 🙂‍↕️
