Natural Hydrogen

October 1, 2025  •  EPISODE 280

Could the Earth itself be a source of clean energy? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings dives into the world of natural hydrogen—how it forms deep within the Earth’s crust, how scientists discover and measure it, and the possibilities it holds for a low-carbon future. Explore the science, the opportunities, and the challenges that could shape the next chapter of clean energy.

The episode on Natural Hydrogen was really interesting. I didn’t realize that hydrogen gas can occur naturally underground and might be a clean energy source. It’s surprising how little attention it gets compared to solar or wind. If scientists can figure out how to extract and use it efficiently, it could play a big role in reducing carbon emissions. I also thought it was cool how natural hydrogen seeps have been discovered in places like Mali and Russia. Definitely made me think differently about the future of energy.

Natural hydrogen is a type of clean energy that comes straight from the Earth, not made in factories. Scientists have found that it can form underground, like in rocks or near volcanoes, and it can be collected to use as fuel. What’s really cool is that when you burn hydrogen, it only makes water, not pollution, so it could help fight climate change.
