Harnessing UV Light to Combat Bacteria

April 17, 2024  •  EPISODE 218

In this episode of ScienceLIVE, Roger Billings highlights the power of germicidal UV light to combat bacteria. After developing an electrolyzer to generate hydrogen and oxygen, he encountered a challenge with bacteria buildup in Europe, where ozone-treated water was causing issues. His innovative solution led to a breakthrough invention used by dentists across the U.S. to ensure sterilization and safety.

I find it interesting what Mr. Tobias said about the motors through the scientists who work. As a huge fan and geek about motorized vehicles, specifically cars and bikes, that was the most entertaining thing about science I’ve ever heard!! I’m so glad I was able to learn about this process. This is my first time on Science live and I’m already loving it!!

Love the cool soccer robots and loved the student spotlight for today. Hope one day I can be on student spotlight. Also loved the student who did the cool science fair project. It was amazing since I also loved music.

The difference between the Learned and scripted robots/Animatronics were very interesting. The learned behaviors seemed to have a better chance of being like the action being asked than the scripted action.

I wonder if this could be used in nanotechnology. Maybe, after cancerous cells have been detected by some other means, a nanobot can enter the cell and destroy the DNA with UV.
