Binary Decade Counter

February 18, 2026  •  EPISODE 298

How do integrated circuits actually work? In this episode of Science LIVE with Roger Billings, explore the fundamentals of integrated circuits with a closer look at a binary decade counter and how it processes and counts electrical signals.

Learn more about the Acellus Robot Dance Contest and Acellus World, coming to Kansas City in May 2026! And get ready to discover fascinating science in the natural world—from hydrophobic spiders that repel water to the surprising fact that rainbows include invisible colors beyond what our eyes can see.

Nice science live, and I had a thought for how to get the hydrophobic effect to work on a solar panel. Because I’m guessing we can’t put the marks in the panel directly, we put a clear plastic or other clear material over the solar panel with the marks put in so it creates the hydrophobic effect without damaging said panel.

My favorite part of the episode is the Technology Spotlight! In the Technology Spotlight, Dr. John discussed water spiders and the new material they made based on them. Aquaphobic material is a thin substance that forms a thin layer of air between the water. I believe that this could be used on electronic devices to avoid potential water damage. I can’t wait for the next update!

Researchers at the University of Osaka in Japan have been trying to tackle the problem of harnessing energy from waves in the ocean. This would be a great resource for fuel, as waves are always crashing on the beach. But, people have been trying for years and still no luck. The researchers, however, figured out this problem by having a gyroscopic system floating in the water that takes the energy from the waves coming into it while it spins.
