How to Invent
November 19, 2025 • EPISODE 287
How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

Commenting l love Tobias stories. @ was so fun to learn.
This science live was really interesting! I had no idea email was invented like that! I think it would’ve been pretty funny if they did change to an exclamation point instead of the @ symbol, It’d be very enthusiastic
I don’t plan on being a scientist when I grow up, but who doesn’t love to listen and LEARN about it? It’s like my neighbor said: “You may not love something, and like to do something, but it’s another tool under your belt.”
I am just waiting for the moment for something to ask a science question, so I can go ” Hey! I know that!”
I think it is very interesting that disney makes robots. Thank you for doing science live i love it.😍😍
I think it’s cool that scientists at the University of Tokyo created a dull light microscope to look into cells.
I LOVE SCIENCE LIVE SO MUCH!!!!!
i love science live i bought the bracelet 😀
liked the part about teaching the robots how to fall. I liked to learn about the @ sign.
I feel like the ideas I have are now able to be turned into something after watching this episode!
Learning morse code would be such a cool skill to learn!

Morse code is so interesting, I would even take a class on it.
My favorite subject is ASL.
I like acellus because It helped me with math before acellus I was bad at math but when I started acellus it helped me so much and encouraged me to keep trying and don’t give when I fail.
I loved how real the robots look when they fall lol. They look so goofy!!
I didn’t know the difference between ham and CB radios.
Learning about how robots fall to protect their vulnerable parts was awesome!
Inventing is very good and i hope that one day i can invent something and we figure out how to harness energy from lighting.
love this episode!
I love watching science live!!
Acellus is amazing
Science live is always very educational and this video was very enjoyable. 😁
I love how people invest stuff and think so creatively
i liked where the robots were trying to prevent the battery breaking
I think its cool how they use beeping noises for letters for code.
I want to invent a car that is electric that turns into a plane and a boat!
If scientists can study cells with that microscope can they also learn how to kill cancerous cells better?
If you have an idea for an invention but don’t know how to built it yet, what’s the first step you should take to figure out if it could actually work?
I really think adding morse code to the activities section will be really cool! I also really liked the part about teaching the robots how to fall.
What was the first email called? Where was it sent to and who was it addressed to and from?
I love acellus
Morse code is pretty interesting i would like to learn more about it.
I love Morse code. I wanna learn it
Morse code is a very interesting topic and can be a life saver in some situations.
Thank you for explaining the scholarship to us. I was kind of worried because I massed a couple of episodes at the beginning of this school year.

I really like this video on how there are now robots that are learning to fall gracefully, and I liked to learn about the morse code. I had a question, on how you had found and invented and helped create hydrogen cars.
I love science live. I enjoying learning how things are invented and who stated the new invention.
what a coincidence! yesterday, my sister found a picture showing every letter in morse code, and we tried it! its very fun to learn new languages
morse code is so fascinating!!
The HAM radio CB radio were both so interesting. Im looking forward to studying more about them!
r51 is so funny!
Dr. John’s segment was great. The robots falling and then posing is too funny!
My favorite pose personally was the one where the robot had put it’s hands on the back of it’s head LMAO.
I love science live. it helps to learn different things that we not know how it is invented.
I really thought the story of how you got power to the conference to run the amp, was really interesting. That you knew how to do that was impressive. I didn’t know that was even possible until this episode of science live.
Science live is so interesting this week!
I would love to learn Morse code!

Thank you Acellus! I love this episode!
I always look forward to the mini history lesson-esc stories with each Science Live.
I want to be an inventor when i grow up. In the movie Meet the Robinsons, they celebrate when an invention fails because you learn more when you fail. It makes me excited to try new things and be creative to create something brand new. I hope I can invent something awesome.
DrB is my favorite teacher he is so cool I want to be just like him when I grow up.
I think everyone needs to watch science live
I enjoyed how this video built on the lessons about Morse code from last week. It’s interesting how something so simple turned into what our communication is today.
I❤Science live
I’ve learned so much and am so excited to experiment with new ideas!
Wow, I didn’t know the “@” symbol went hundreds of years back. Honestly, I thought it was only made when computers started being invented. I also like the idea of adding Morse Code to the activities, since I would really enjoy learning more about it. Thank you for this great video!

Acellus live videos have been super helpful. I love how the teachers and Dr. Rodger Billings break down the lessons step by step and make the information super easy to learn.
Thank you so much for teaching us new things!!!
I hate that people are taking advantage of the scholarship. You give us a week to watch one hour long episode in return for a huge discount on valuable learning. I am a senior and been with Acellus all of my high school years. It has never been a problem to watch an episode, even if I am on the road. Thank you for what you have provided to many students,
I agree With you, Caden! It is Very Angering! I Have done EVERY SINGLE one Since I started (I Started Acellus Jan 14 2025!) I have LOVED all the Science L!ves I have watched! Thanks Acellus For a AMAZING schooling system For students like me! 😀 😀 😀

Dr Roger’s is the best science teacher in the world.
I love the part where he tells about the math part and vectored instruction.
I loved learning about Emails! I got to share facts with my parents that they didn’t even know about!
To invent something, start by observing a real problem, then let curiosity guide your ideas. Experiment, test often, learn from every failure, and keep refining.
I like how you explained that you just need to find the next step after the latest technology to become an inventor.
My dad ‘s favorite saying is “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Inventing is like eating an elephant, you do it one bit at a time.
Morse code is still used today but not as frequently due to the amount of opportunities we have to create new inventions.
Morse code is fascinating!! Love science!
I LOVE SCIENCE LIVE😍
I love watching these, I feel like I learn something new every week, even if its just a little something.
My dad was in the Navy on Submarines and would tell me how in the early days they would use morse code to communicate which is pretty cool.

Science live is always motivating!Thank you!
That was great! I’ll be sure to remember the helpful tips provided to invent something!
Researchers programmed robots to perform specific poses to help them fall better, easier, and with style, but the robots that were used are small in size. Would larger robots, which weigh significantly more, require advanced programming with differing poses to ensure a safe and stylish landing?
I love watching each Science Live episode!
We love science live and look forward to it every week!
I wonder what the next greatest invention will be?
Thank you for Acellus science live!
Always love Science Lives!!
