How to Invent

November 19, 2025  •  EPISODE 287

How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

I think it’s so incredibly fascinating how Dr. Tobias spoke about how in the 1960s, a man named Ray Tomlinson got a job with a company that was working on Arpanet (a computer network that was still being researched and tested on). The goal behind this idea was to see if two computers could communicate with each other. Thus, this would eventually lead to what we now have as email. I mean in today’s time, you just hit the send button, and it’s sent out within seconds, but how did we get there? How did the process work? It’s amazing to see the thinking process behind the ideas of great inventions that would later serve a huge purpose for the future.

It’s great that we’re evolved from emails. Even though it’s partially sad we barely use them anymore, its still like our own signature digitally. Nowadays we just use text messages and even apps to communicate. But learning about the older methods like writing letters, mailing them, and using email to talk to one another is fascinating. You truly cannot have the future without the making of our past! 😊
