How to Invent

November 19, 2025  •  EPISODE 287

How do great inventions begin? In this episode of Science LIVE, Dr. Roger Billings breaks down the process of inventing—showing how curiosity, creativity, and simple problem-solving can grow into real innovations. Using Morse code as an example, he explains how messages are sent and demonstrates it with a telegraph key. A fun, practical look at how anyone can start turning ideas into inventions.

In episode 287 of Science Live, ‘How To Invent,’ Dr. John in the ‘Technology Spotlight’ segment talked about researchers at Disney designing ways for a robot to fall in style in the real world. Dr. Tobias in the ‘Science Breakthrough’ segment talked about an American programmer by the name of Ray Tomlinson who improved the ARPANET and successfully attempted to invent a way to send a message from one computer to another. In the final segment, Dr. Billings talked about how to invent.

An elective course on Morse Code would be really fun to learn! I am also excited there will be a Live on Thanksgiving Eve ( my job rarely is able to accomodate my request for Wednesday evenings off, so I can actually watch Science Live, “live”, but we are closing early!) I also think those that don’t watch Live (especially since Dr Billings is gracious enough to give us a whole week to watch, to qualify for the scholarship) should be called out/dropped. This is an amazing opportunity for so many of us kids and our parents. If parents don’t hold their kids accountable for something like this, that is a scarry thing (and bigger issue as we will all be adults one day) I am actually bummed that I am going to be able to apply for graduation next week ( I really did love Acellus and all it offered me and the Lives were my favorite.. Dr. Billings is so intelligent and has such a way of explaining things ( my public school science teachers were so boring, which made it hard to want to learn) that make us want to continue learning, questioning why, and even attempting at inventing something. Luckily for me, my brother is still a student for at least 4 more years, and I know I will be joining him in watching Live. Great job Dr. Billings and team, we appreciate you!
